Joseph Galipeau Obituary

Norwich - Joseph Paul Galipeau, 66, a teacher to some, a mentor to a few, and a friend to all-died Sunday, Feb. 21, 2021, at his home in Norwich, surrounded by his loving wife of 46 years, two devoted children, and caring son-in-law.

Born Dec. 15, 1954, in Dearborn, Mich. to Dorius P. Galipeau and Shirley Seifert Galipeau, Joe loved the water and lived on the Oyster River in Old Saybrook for 15 years before returning to Norwich. There he enjoyed boating, fishing, and lobstering with family and friends. If the fish were not biting, Joe's sense of humor would keep all entertained.

Joe was a graduate of Norwich Free Academy, Class of 1972, and the Connecticut Police Academy. He worked for the Norwich Police Department starting in 1978 as a patrolman and became a member of the Tactical Patrol Force and Dive Team in 1982. A man of many talents, he left NPD to start his own building and remodeling business, and years later worked as a Campus Supervisor for a regional high school before falling ill.

His memory will be cherished and kept alive by his wife and high school sweetheart, Cynthia Chicos Galipeau; children, Joseph Galipeau Jr. (Kaitlyn), and Christina Galipeau Kieslich (Gregory); his seven grandchildren, Isabella and Fauna Galipeau, Diana and Leah Kozerefski, Corbin, Charlotte, and Mabel Kieslich; his sister, Barbara Galipeau Lowden (Richard); his brother, Paul Galipeau (Ma'da); his aunt and godmother, Irene Galipeau; nieces and nephew.

The family wishes to thank all nurses and staff of Smilow Cancer Center of Waterford, especially Dr. Benjamin Newton, as well Center for Hospice Care in Norwich for its thoughtful service.

Friends and family are invited to celebrate Joe's life at a viewing from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 26, or at 9:45 a.m. Saturday, at the Woyasz and Son Funeral Home, 141 Central Avenue, Norwich. A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 27, at Sacred Heart Church, 57 West Town Street, Norwich. Interment will take place at St. George's Cemetery in Bakersfield, Vermont in early Spring. In lieu of flowers, please consider a tribute donation to Hospice.

The Funeral Mass will be lived streamed on ZOOM. Meeting ID: 815 0928 9849 Passcode: galipeau.

Another year has passed and the pain of losing you is still in my heart. You were my little brother and I loved you so much and always will. I miss the fun times we shared and laughing until we cried. You were my little brother, my advise giver, turkey carver and carpenter but most of all someone I could always count on. Know matter where life took us in the end we are brother and sister with a special bond. I will always miss you and love you.

I can't believe it is almost 1 year since you left us! I miss you so much and life will never be the same. I thank the Lord for all the wonderful memories I will always have of the two of us. Life takes us in many directions but in the end love for each other endures. Love you always little brother.

My heart is broken for the loss of my brother. Life will never be the same. Chuck and I have so many fun and happy memories of our time together. Adventures, cruises, turkey sandwiches with mayo not Miracle Whip, playing games and going dancing. I loved him so much and always will. Cindy you have been through so much taking care of Joe and I wish you peace now. He is not suffering anymore. He had such a strong will to live for the kids and his grandkids. He was a true blessing to his family and will be missed until we meet again. Love, Chuck and Barbara
