Joy Hewitt Obituary

New London - Joy Palm Hewitt, 76, died at home with her family, May 28, 2022. Joy was born in New London, Dec. 22, 1945, the daughter of the late Frederick W. Palm and Mildred (Hawaka) Palm; and sister to Frederick W. Palm Jr. and Carole Forester.

Joy graduated from Robert E. Fitch Senior High School, Class of 1963, where she was homecoming queen. She received her bachelor's degree from Southern Connecticut State University in 1967, and a master's in special education from the University of Connecticut in 1970. She was a licensed special education teacher in Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New York, and helped her former husband build and conduct his law exam writing business.

Joy spent 12 years in Brooklyn, and 12 years in Sewickley, a suburb of Pittsburgh, working and raising her three children before her love of the ocean brought her back to Connecticut in 2001. In 2005, Joy remarried and spent her retirement years traveling the world with her husband, Peter Hewitt, watching her beloved Yankees and UConn women's basketball and showering attention on her grandchildren and dog Gracie. Throughout her life, she spread joy.

Joy is survived by her husband; three children; and five grandchildren; as well as sisters-in-law, Barbara Palm and Tracey Hewitt; and five nieces.

Joy's family will be celebrating her life and memory in a private ceremony. The family would like to express their deepest appreciation to Joy's dedicated and loving personal aides, especially Beverley Wedderburn.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Joy's memory may be made to a charity of the donor's choice. Memories and messages can be sent to Joy's family at [email protected].

We met Joy 51 years ago when they came to live in our Village and I had the privilege of becoming Wentworths Childminder until they returned back home to the USA. Joy was a very kind and loving Person who I know will be thoroughly missed by so many Family and Friends, I will certainly miss our annual Christmas catch ups and Family updates.

I am a cousin of Earl Miller. My aunt, Grace Pinkston, adored Joy and was always glad when she came to Washington, DC to visit. My husband and I were at Leigh's wedding and Joy and her husband were the most gracious hosts. She will be missed as she was an extraordinarily kind and humble person. Never knew she was Homecoming Queen.

I also grew up on Bill Avenue and met Joy as a neighbor. My mother and I ran into Joy in 2001 at Fred´s Shanty where she immediately recognized my mother. We had a great conversation of Bill Ave and all the memories of neighbors and friends. May all the memories her family have help to ease their grief. Rest in the light Joy!

So sorry to hear about Joy's passing. I grew up with Joy when we both lived on Bill Ave. in Groton. We were able to reconnect a few years ago when I was down from NH and in Waterford. I have wonderful memories of us as kids.

I was so sad to hear this news. As teenagers, Joy and I were neighbors and great friends. The years and distance have kept us apart but we kept in touch and for that, I will always be grateful. May she rest in peace.
