Please accept my condolences on the loss on your husband. I served under Chief Small in the Reactor Control Division on the Skate until November 1967. I enjoyed working for him especially during the time we were in the shipyard. His leadership was invaluable in ensuring everything went smoothly during that time.
My wife and I appreciate that you and Chief Small were able to attend our engagement party in Norfolk in 1967.

Aunt Ev, Aunt Ev. I so want to be with you now.
You, Uncle Ken, Alicia & Tony have always shown our family the kind of love that is written about through the ages.
Uncle was a kind fellow. Funny, intelligent and most importantly for me, he held this unending generosity of spirit that made me feel absolutely safe, modeling "all will be well." Uncle Ken had me thinking that I might like to go to Nebraska. Nebraska might be good for me. The "Small´s" always rolled out the red carpet even in a moments notice. That "farm boy" knew just how to make us all feel so comfortable and at ease. I remember plenty of times being happy around the kitchen table singing. When I was young and took the first trip to Connecticut to visit you, we were a train-full. Your doors and hearts were wide open. Those trips happened many times. He was so good to everyone he met... with that million dollar grin and tone of voice. Uncle Ken loved life and he loved you and his family. What a guy! We are so blessed. The tears flow knowing that he is not going to open the door here for me, but thinking of him being greeted by our loves passed before is a sweet tender gift. What an amazing duo God put together! I always came away from your home feeling full of life. When Alicia and Tony could be there too, it was icing on the cake.
With all our love during this sacred time, we think of you and pray,
Bob, Maryann & Maria

Dear Evelyn, family and friends of Ken´s,
On behalf of the United States Submarine Veterans, we offer our sincere condolences at Ken´s passing. Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. We are always saddened whenever a fellow "Bubblehead" leaves on Eternal Patrol. He served with honor on the USS Sea Devil (SS-400), USS Redfin (SS_272), USS Hake (SS-256), USS Tench (SS-417) and as Chief of the Boat aboard USS Skate (SSN-578).
To our "Brother-of-the-Phin" we say, "Sailor, rest your oar. We have the watch. Fair Winds and Following Seas." Thank you for your service to our country.
Evelyn and family... "may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times in every way. The Lord be with you." 2 Thessalonians 3:16 (ESV).

So very sorry hearing of Ken's passing. I called him "farmer Ken" while living on Marjories Way.
Wondering if the cactus(s) (I shared with him) are still in front..growing strong??

Chief Small was the consumate professional, teacher, watchstander, and friend. He was a great role model for anyone to look up to, especially green, wet-behind-the-ears, junior officers like me. The goat locker will be a more lonely place without him, but heaven will be better off from now on. Blessings on his family and friends.

I'm so sorry to hear about Ken.
Evelyn, he was a great man. Ken taught me a lot about nuclear power plants and how to treat people while being a leader. I've been thanking him for a long time.

My deepest sympathy to his family. I served on Skate with him from 1967 until his retirement. I bought a whole life policy from him when he started out in insurance. He was well liked and respected.
