He was born Nov. 30, 1942 in Warren, Ohio, son of the late Bruce and Lillian (Tartar) Whittaker.
On May 9, 1998 he was married to Frances Verlicco in Boulluville. She survives him.
Mr. Whittaker worked at Electric Boat until 1979. He then worked as a longshoreman at the New Haven Terminal until retiring in 1995.
Mr. Whittaker was a U.S. Navy Veteran having served from 1960 to 1963.
Besides his wife he is survived by a daughter, Renee Mattison, of Mystic; two sons, James Whittaker and his wife Sharon of Salem, and Michael Whittaker and his wife Caroline of Oakdale; a step daughter, Julie Bruscato and her husband Chad of Plainfield; a brother, Robert Whittaker and his wife Carie of Niles, Ohio; two sisters, Patricia Schmidt and her husband Karl of Warren, Ohio, and Carol Gross and her husband Butch of Niles, Ohio; twelve grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a brother, Donald Whittaker.
The funeral service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Gagne-Piechowski Funeral Home, 490 Voluntown Rd., Rt. 138, Jewett City. Interment will follow in Pachaug Cemetery, Griswold. Calling hours are Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m.
Donations may be made to Masonicare Hospice and Palliative Care, 111 Founders Plaza, East Hartford, CT.
