Kevin Devine Obituary

Lisbon - Kevin J. Devine, 54, a resident of Lisbon, passed away at home on Nov. 21, 2009, surrounded by his family, after a courageous battle with cancer.

On June 6, 1955, he was born in New London, the son of Marguerite (Campbell) Devine of Lakeland, Fla., and the late Julian J. Devine.

Kevin grew up in Waterford with his three sisters and graduated from St. Bernard High School in Uncasville in 1973. He attended Thames Valley Technical College studying industrial management.

He married Susan (Baciewski) Devine on April 2, 1977, at Sacred Heart Church in Taftville.

Kevin joined Electric Boat in 1976, becoming the youngest foreman of nuclear steel trades in the Groton shipyard at 20 years of age. He progressed throughout the shipyard holding foreman level responsibilities and advancing to steel trades general foreman in 1983. Kevin held the position of launch manager of two trident class submarines, the SSBN Kentucky and the SSBN Maryland. In 1988, Kevin was promoted to ship's manager and had overseen all construction and delivery of the 688 class submarines, the SSN Sante Fe and the SSN Columbia. In 2004, he became the Seawolf Program Manager and in January 2005, Director of Ships Management. Kevin was named Vice President of Submarine Maintenance and Modernization in November 2005. He loved his job, saying it is an honor and a privilege to work with the men and women who build the best.

His love of sports brought Kevin to coach in the Norwich Youth Football League for 11 years and served as the President of the Southern New England Youth Football Conference for five years. He loved coaching and especially enjoyed being able to coach both of his sons in the little league and youth football, never missing a practice or a game. Within his last year of coaching, he derived great pleasure and satisfaction coaching the 2002 Senior Wildcat football team to a league championship.

He enjoyed attending sporting events of his favorite teams; the New England Patriots, New York Yankees and UCONN Football.

Kevin and his wife enjoyed cruising in the Caribbean and vacationing in Hilton Head, S.C.

In addition to his wife Susan, he leaves two sons, Matthew L. Devine of Jewett City and Kyle R. Devine and wife, Sheena, of Norwich; mother, Marguerite Devine of Lakeland, Fla.; sister, Maureen O'Brien and husband, J.R., of Natick, Mass., Kathleen Gerritt and husband, Ford, of Lakeland, Fla., Mimi McLaughlin and husband, Bill, of Dedham, Mass.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Family, friends and co-workers are invited to join the family at a memorial service to celebrate his life. The service will be held at 4:30 p.m. on Dec. 1, 2009, at the Norwich Inn and Spa, 607 West Thames Street, Norwich.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of SECT, 227 Dunham Street, Norwich, CT 06360.

The Woyasz and Son Funeral Home are assisting the family with arrangements.

I worked with Kevin for nearly 20 years. He expected a lot from me and of himself. He led by example and taught me a lot. Here's my attempt at capturing how I feel:

Kevin loved football, his kids and his wife
Kevin loved shipbuilding, Kevin loved life

He never dressed fancy, always spoke his mind
He could be quite hard but more often kind

Kevin showed you can have fun and still lead
And always quite generous to others in need

I will remember his laugh and that look in his eye
When I said something wrong, and didn't know why

Kevin was a wiseman, with wit and charm
Always protecting his friends form all harm

When Kevin had passed he was not very old
It must be hard on a heart to be made of Gold

Kevin was a mentor in many ways. The sparkle of humor in his eyes during even the most stressful times in our operations provided many of us with that extra ounce of leadership, making difficult tasks easy.
Fair winds and following seas old friend.
May GOD hold you in the palm of his hand.

To Susan, the boys and the entire Devine family, on behalf of all of the members of the Southern New England Youth Football Conference, our condolences on Kevin's passing.

I Remember a man who wanted to get to the point;

I Remember a coach who commanded the sidelines with a towel around his neck;

I Remember a leader who gave years of his life to promote youth football;

I Remember a President who suffered no fools;

I Remember a giant among men who was focused on the children;

I Remember a mediator who's greatest tool was a single word..."PEACE";

But most of all, I Remember a friend whom I could spar with, kibitz with, and depend upon regardless of the subject or situation.

I am saddened by his passing, but forever thankful for the time that I knew Kevin.

Peace - - I know he now has it; may his family and friends also find its comfort in the days that lie ahead.

Kevin was my best friend and confidant at Electric Boat and we truly bonded over the years we spent together in the shipyard. Behind that tough exterior was a gentle and caring man who loved his family, both at home and at the shipyard. Having Kevin join the executive staff was a joy and a blessing very few of us will ever understand. I will miss him dearly.

Kevin was the older brother I never had....We became teammates my sophmore year (1972) during spring football at St. Bernard. Later that year he moved to Quaker Hill and our friendship grew. He was always first up the hill for football practice & "Bubba" was a leader and helped push me to do my best and never quit. He was passionate about USC football and the Minnesota Vikings (Chuck Foreman)and we spent many hours in the offseason playing football on Sundays at Conn College, basketball at SBHS with Brother Cormac & softball with our friends at Montville HS....We shared many a ride to Mohegan CC & then to EB before I left to go to LA...My thoughts & prayers are with you Kevin & your family.....Fight On! Love & Mercy always--Rest in Peace my friend--your work is done. Your father has callled you home...

I have had the honor and pleasure of knowing and working with Kevin all these years. He was a hard working, sincere, and down to earth man. He set such good examples and respected everyone around him. To know "Lumpy" was to love and respect him. He will truely be missed by all. Now May God Bless you and give you peace and strength in your time of need just as Kevin gave to all who needed him over the years.
