Kevin Karlson Obituary

New London - Beloved husband, father and radio personality Kevin Richard Karlson, 59, passed away unexpectedly and peacefully in his sleep Oct. 27, 2023. Kevin was born March 7, 1964, in Akron, Ohio.

Kevin worked as a morning drive radio host on iHeart Radio, 100.7 WZLX in Boston for almost 20 years. Ever the humble radio personality, he was the highlight of many thousands of listeners' morning routines. He began his radio career over 40 years ago in Ohio and soon moved to Connecticut, where he met his beloved wife, Barbara San Juan Karlson, of 35 years. He and Barbara traveled to many cities across the country, while Kevin developed his craft of entertainment radio with his co-host Pete McKenzie.

Although known to many as a successful radio personality, his proudest accomplishments were his children, Christopher and Katie. Just recently, Christopher, Katie and Kevin traveled to Colorado and Utah, where they experienced a life-changing hiking and ATV adventure together. Kevin had many fans, but his true, number one fan was his wife, Barbara. Despite being the subject of many awkward on-air skits, Barbara supported Kevin in every aspect of his life and career. He loved cruising with her to tropical locations and going to the casino. Kevin was infamous among close friends and family for recording random conversations to replay on-air. No topic was off limits. He was an avid sports fan of any team and was always willing to put a wager on any event. Kevin loved to laugh, play cards and smoke his cigars on his deck. His infectious cackle will be sorely missed.

Kevin is survived by his wife Barbara; son Christopher; and daughter Katie; brother James (Marianne) Karlson; and sister Rhonda Karlson of Ohio; brother-in-law Joseph (Angela) San Juan; sister-in-law Deana (Joseph) Nott of Connecticut; puppy Stewart; and countless nieces, nephews and cousins.

It would be remiss to exclude that Kevin is also survived by his work "brother," Pete McKenzie and his work "wife," Heather Ford and producer Kenny Young. Kevin is predeceased by his father James Karlson; mother Bonnie Karlson; father-in-law Joseph San Juan; and mother-in-law Patricia San Juan - known to many listeners as "Patsy from Peabody" and "Pigskin Patsy."

Family and friends are invited to calling hours 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 1, at Impellitteri-Malia Funeral Home, 84 Montauk Avenue, New London. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Tunnel to Towers Foundation, T2T.org. Tunnel to Towers aims to pay off the mortgages of fallen law enforcement officers and firefighters who lose their lives in the line of duty, or to 9/11 related illness.

Kevin, Pete and Heather were my constant work day companions on the way to and at work. They were always able to help start my day with laughs and smiles and because they were willing to open up their personal and family lives to the listeners they became more than just voices on the radio. They became to feel more like friends. That's why Kevin's untimely passing hit me so hard. My most sincere sympathies. Kevin is most certainly missed and the show he was such an important part of is missed every morning that I get up and go to work.

As a listener of Kevin and the morning show, I am sorry for your loss. Kevin was a year older than me and I would have loved to have had the chance to meet him.
When my father passed a few years ago, I wrote a poem which I would like to share with you, but especially Kevin´s children. I hope this will help, even the slightest.

That´s what my father taught to me

When I was just a boy looking up at my Dad, asking all the questions that I thought, that I had. And he looked over said "just watch and you´ll see". That´s what my father taught to me.
I remember his laughter I remember his style, his way with all others and his wonderful smile. I remember his love of friends and family. That´s what my father taught to me.
And wherever you go and whatever you do, I´ll be right there behind you, to carry you through. And whatever you are and whatever you say, remember I´ll never be too far away.
Well the years went on by and I found my own life, got married, had a family, together with my wife. And when the kids asked me questions, I said just watch and you´ll see. Just like my father taught to me.
And wherever you go and whatever you do, I´ll be right there behind you, to carry you through. And whatever you are and whatever you say, remember I´ll never be too far away.
And on the day that he died, I felt empty inside, and I sat there and cried for a while. But I thought of his life and the lessons I´d learned, and my tears soon turned into a smile. Because... Wherever I go and whatever I do, he´ll be right there behind me, to carry me through. And whatever I am and whatever I say, I know that he´ll never be too far away.
I´ll always be with you because you´re a part of me, that´s what my father taught to me.
I´ll always be with you because you´re a part of me. That´s what my father taught, that´s what my father taught, that´s what my father taught to me.

20 years of morning laughter turned to tears today. I feel as if I know Kevin, his family, Pete and Heather. I´m so sad for you all. What are we to do now?

This is such sad news. The Karlsons lived in our neighborhood when I was growing up. I´m not surprised to read all the heartfelt messages from his listeners. Sending my deepest condolences to all Kevin left behind.
