Leila Smolenski Obituary

New London - Leila (McGarry) Smolenski, 84, of New London, entered eternal life on Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2017.

She was born Feb. 6, 1933, in Cleveland, Ohio, the daughter of the late John T. and Isabel (Price) McGarry. Moving to New London at an early age, she attended local schools and graduated from the former Williams Memorial Institute Class of 51. Leila worked for the State of Conn. as a secretary at the University of Connecticut, Storrs Campus, retiring in 1995. She was formerly an active volunteer for the Chamber of Commerce and a passionate New England Patriots fan.

She is survived by six sons, David, Steven and Denise, Walter and Kathy, Daniel, John, Mark and Lisa Smolenski; her thirteen grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and her former husband, Walter Smolenski.

She was predeceased by a brother, Father Joseph McGarry; two sisters, Isabel McGarry and Clare Skelley; four granddaughters, Sasha, Tessa, Gabrielle and Amy Smolenski; and a daughter-in-law, Lauren Smolenski.

Guests are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Saturday, in St. Joseph Church, New London. Interment to follow in St. Mary Cemetery and visiting hours are private.

Donations in her memory may be made to Center for Hospice Care, 227 Dunham St., Norwich, CT 06360.

The Impellitteri-Malia Funeral Home, 84 Montauk Ave., New London, has been entrusted with her care.
