Lewis Cornelius Obituary
After graduating from high school, Lew served in the U.S. Navy. He served on many submarines as an electrician and later as an instructor for nuclear power, completing his Navy career of over 20 years.
Later, Lew worked for Electric Boat. His last position was manager of EEO (Equal Employment Opportunity). He established the BEC (Black Engineers Council), which is still active today. He was very involved in the community and in local politics. Lew also had his own radio show on WSUB.
Lew was the father of Felisa Chatman. Felisa and her husband Robert survive him. Besides his wife Felisa, he was preceded in death by his sister Jean.
The family will greet friends from noon to 1 p.m. Monday March 15, 2021. Funeral services will start immediately after the visitation beginning at 1 p.m. at the Byles Memorial Home, 99 Huntington Street, New London. Burial will follow with military honors at the Starr Burial Ground in Groton.
For COVID-19 protocol - masks must be worn; social distancing is in effect; and there is a guest limit in the building at one time. I worked for Chief Cornelius onboard the USS Ethan Allen, he was an outstanding boss, and had a way of teaching you that made everything seem easy and logical. Very much admired by all who worked for him.

I'm sadden by the passing of Lew. I would think about him often. I am truly fortunate to have met Lew and his family. I learned a lot from him ask a colleague and friend. Our days at EB was taxing some time but Lew never quit. It was a great experience and pleasure working with him as part of the BEC. He would invite me along to many meetings. A true mentor and friend ❤. Felisa we will keep you in our thoughts and prayers . God bless you!

I had the pleasure of working with Lew at Electric Boat for many years. He was truly a man of honorable character and integrity with a concern for all. He also possessed a good sense of humor and a radiant smile. To his family I offer my sincerest condolences.

I was saddened to see that Mr. Cornelius had passed away. I have been retired for nearly two years, but I always enjoyed seeing Lew in the office. Besides medicine , we had many good discussions about a variety of subjects. I shall miss him.
