Mahassen Saad Obituary

Waterford - Mahassen El-Attrache Saad, 87, of 5 Paula Lane, Waterford, passed away Thursday, May 30, 2024. Mahassen was born Nov. 26, 1936, in Al-Qrayya, Syria, to Zaid and Hidiya El-Attrache. The oldest daughter of eight siblings, she grew up in Damascus, and later married Shawki Amin Saad of Ain-Anoub, Lebanon. Together, they moved to Monrovia, Liberia, to begin their lives. In 1979, the family immigrated to the United States ,and settled in Waterford.

Mahassen was a force of nature; a petite powerhouse who raised three boys and one girl alone in a new country with a new language and customs. Mahassen shepherded her family through this new world with dignity, grace, and strength. She treated people with courtesy and respect and expected the same. She did not suffer fools or falseness in people and expected people to live up to their best selves. She earned the respect and admiration of all who knew her.

Mahassen loved her children fiercely and unconditionally - a devotion born out of a history of danger and turmoil from her native land. She left her home and all she knew and dove into the unknown. It was easy to take her strength for granted; she always showed herself to be strong and in control, but as children become adults, it becomes clear this took unbelievable strength of will, determination and sacrifice. Her loss, will be tremendously felt and will leave an empty void, in our hearts, for a long time to come.

Khalil Gibran once wrote: "The mother is everything – she is our consolation in sorrow, our hope in misery, and our strength in weakness. She is the source of love, mercy, sympathy and forgiveness. Everything in nature bespeaks the mother."

Mahassen is survived by her daughter Maysun Saad; her three sons, Rami Saad, Louay Saad with his wife Jennifer and their children, Dylan and Savannah, and Amin Saad and his wife Sandra. In addition, Mahassen leaves behind her sister Layla Al-Khalil; as well as her three brothers, Anwar, Mohanned and Mulhamm El-Attrache; as well as a host of nieces and nephews.

Her family will receive friends and family from 10 to noon Thursday, June 6, at the Thomas L Neilan and Sons Funeral Home, 48 Grand Street, Niantic. A graveside service will follow at 12:30 p.m. at Jordan Cemetery, Boston Post Road, Waterford.

Mom. What can I say. Without your teachings, wisdom, love and discipline, I would not have grown to be the person I am today. Life will not be the same without you, but I will carry you in my heart for as long as I draw breath. You will be severally missed.
