Ms. Goldberg, the daughter of Dorothy Friedman and the late Dr. Bertram Friedman, was born on Dec. 23, 1939, in Middletown. She grew up in Moodus and attended public school there until 1955, when her family relocated to Germany for two years while her father served active duty in the U.S. Army. Marcie graduated from Frankfurt American High School in 1957.
Upon her return to the United States, Marcie matriculated at the University of Connecticut. While there, she met Joseph Goldberg, a lifelong resident of Norwich, whom she married in 1960. Marcie and Joe would have celebrated their 49th wedding anniversary this June. Marcie graduated from UConn in 1961 with a bachelor of arts degree in English.
A resident of Norwich for 48 years, Marcie was an active volunteer at Beth Jacob synagogue while raising her four children, Robin Goldberg of Southbury, Skip Goldberg of Weston, Steven Goldberg of Greenwich, and Eric Goldberg of Jersey City, N. J. After her children were grown, she began a second career as an English teacher at Huntington Institute in Norwich where she was well-loved by her students. Around that time, Marcie also took up golf, mainly to please her husband, but she turned out to have a real knack for the game and developed a passion for it.
In 1996, Marcie started a stationery and invitation business, "Personalized Print by Marcie G." What started out as a small home enterprise grew into a multi-faceted business which became well-known in the area for its unique merchandise and Marcie's creativity and expert one-on-one service.
Marcie also served as a youth advisor at Beth Jacob and was a member of its Sisterhood. She was a member of Hadassah and the Pautipaug Country Club.
Marcie will be remembered as a strong, independent, kind, thoughtful and optimistic woman who loved and was loved by her family and her community.
In addition to her husband and children, she is survived by her mother, Dorothy Friedman of Lauderhill, Fla.; a sister, Nancy Brand, of East Lyme; and a brother, Daniel Friedman of Bloomington, Ind. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, Matthew, Emily, Kate, Jonah, Jack, Sam, Zoe, and Henry; as well as her in-laws, Lois and Louis Taylor, Gerson and Ina Goldberg, Andrew Brand, Mary Friedman, Stephen Spear, Debra Wise, Katey Goldberg, and Carmem Passos-Goldberg .
Contributions in her name may be made to the ECHO Cancer Foundation, 330 Washington St., Suite 220, Norwich CT 06360 or Beth Jacob Synagogue, 400 New London Turnpike, Norwich CT 08360.
Funeral services for Ms. Goldberg will be held at Beth Jacob Synagogue in Norwich at 11 a.m. on Sunday, March 15. Burial will follow immediately at Hebrew Benevolent Cemetery #3 in Preston.
Church and Allen Funeral Home, Norwich, is assisting the family with arrangements.
