Marcia Wolman Obituary

West Hartford - Marcia Wolman, "Marcie," as she was affectionately known, passed away peacefully Oct. 22, 2022, at the age of 94, surrounded by her loving family. Born April 29, 1928, she was the beloved mother of Len (Robyn), Mark (Julie), Felicia (Ian) and Sharon (Brian); grandmother to more than 12 beloved grandchildren: Nici (Shragi), Nathan (Debra), Michael (Rachel), Liora (Brett), Jaimie (Russell), Howard (Chen), Natana (Jonny), Ryan (Deena), Natasha, Gabe, Lian and Ariella; and seven great-grandchildren: Yonatan, Naftali, Faye, Eitan, Libby, Leo and Ronni.

Marcie was born in South Africa, and emigrated from Johannesburg to Waterford, where she lived for 30 years, until she moved to The McAuley, West Hartford, four years ago. Marcie lived with admirable enthusiasm until the very end. Two of Marcie's mottos were "Walk out the door! You never know what adventures await you;" and "If you're invited somewhere, say yes."

As a young adult, Marcie worked as an admin assistant, and at the age of 19, she joined the "Machal movement" to volunteer in the 1948 Israeli War of Independence. On a return visit to South Africa, she met her husband Naty Wolman (z"l) and settled into a farming life in South Africa, where in partnership, they successfully managed several businesses: a farm, liquor store and camp-ground known as "The Rocks." "The Rocks" became a popular destination for campers, school groups and educational retreats. They, together, created a warm, loving hospitable home, constantly filled with visiting family members and friends.

At the age of 61, Marcie started building a new, busy life in Waterford. She worked at the Jewish Federation of South Eastern Connecticut, and loved being part of the center of the Jewish community. She was a key welcoming person for the many immigrant families who arrived in the community at the time. Marcie enjoyed attending Shabbat services at Beth El, New London, and was a lifelong member of Hadassah.

Marcie embraced her time at The McAuley, and in a short time, she made sincere and meaningful friendships with the residents and staff. Marcie was always on the go, attending movies, theater, musical performances, writing workshops, educational seminars and social events. She was famous for recruiting others, young and old, to join her. She was a voracious reader, always interested in peoples' life stories - her favorite books were biographies. She enjoyed connecting and talking to people, ensuring that newcomers were welcomed "into the circle." Marcie was an exceptional baker. She loved playing Bridge, word games and gathering regularly with her beloved children and grandchildren to play Banagrams.

She was an adventurous world traveler, and her annual visits to spend time with her daughter Felicia and her family in Perth, Australia, provided the opportunity to take in many additional destinations along the way. She visited Israel as often as she could as her passion and love for the country never waned.

Marcie will be deeply and sadly missed by her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, sister-in-law, nieces, nephews and friends who are spread throughout the world. She touched and influenced many lives.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Robert Dicks and the medical team, as well as Bernadette Morgan, her dedicated caregiver and friend, for all of the love and support.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Jewish Federation of Southeastern CT, Hadassah or a charity of your choice. Funeral to be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 23, at Beth El Cemetery, 50 Lestertown Road, Groton. To sign the guest book, share a memory or for directions, please visit www.Byles.com.

To all the Wolmans from all the Malloves and Geffens - sending our love at this sad time. Marcie was an extraordinary woman, full of vigor, intelligence and passion. Building on the past connection of the Geffen and Wolman families in South Africa, Marcie and Roz bonded quickly upon her arrival in New London and enjoyed a wonderful friendship as our families reconnected. May you find comfort in a full life, fully lived, and from family and community. Wishing you a long life.

Thinking of the Wolman clan in this time of grief and celebration of a life extraordinarily lived. I'm so grateful I got to interview Marcie for my family history project in the 2000s, and see her at family gatherings. Sending love to you all.

Although our meeting was brief we were deeply impressed by her warmth and graciousness. We shared stories about our families and found we shared a love for Israel. Wehad stories to tell about family who lived there. When my father escaped from Ukraine (1915) his brothers left for Israel. We knew we had much to share. We were impressed by Marcis's stories of great prowess and devotion. Above all ,she was someone to admire and esteem.

Marcie was one of the best, most interesting women i have ever known, and i feel honored to have known her. She shared so much with me about herself, her family - for all of whom she had an unbounded love - and her absolutely fascinating life. So she will live in my heart and mind forever, as will her kindness to Charlie and me. Our hearts and Prayers go out to her wonderful family, in each of whom i know her love and energy and spirit will live on.

Marcie was an exceptional,
giving, and a wonderful
woman-a beautiful person. I am so sad to learn of her passing-mere words do not seem appropriate. Though it has been a while since I have seen Marcie, I missed her-asked Sharon how she was doing, most frequently. Marcie Wolman had the "larger than life" quality~her loss will leave
a conspicuous void in our community.

The last time I talked to Marcie was in the summer of 2021; she was with Alan Angel, visiting the area. Owning a copy of the book "Machal: Overseas Volunteers in Israel's War of Independence", which Marcie autographed, will keep her memory alive in our home.

I have so many wonderful memories of Marcie throughout the years but particularly of the last few years when she was my Florida friend. She was an exceptional woman who lived life to the full and took every opportunity offered to her. She is the last of a formidable generation and will be missed by all whose lives she touched. Her legacy will live on in her exceptional family. Long life to all
