Martin Berkowitz Obituary

Stonington - Martin J. Berkowitz, 63, of Stonington passed away Sunday, Jan. 2, 2022, after a courageous battle with ALS.

Born Aug. 8, 1958, in New Rochelle, N.Y., and raised in Commack, N.Y., Marty is the son of the late Hal and Roslyn (Levine) Berkowitz. Following his high school graduation, Marty attended Pace University in New York City where he earned his Bachelor of Arts in 1981.

Marty spent 40 years in the furniture industry as a self-employed sales representative up until his recent retirement in 2021. He also served for many years on the International Home Furnishings Representatives Association and assisted in programs to pave a better path for others. Marty especially liked selling outdoor furniture and would often say he "liked to make the world a more casual place." Marty had many friends in the industry and was recently honored with the "Marty Party" in High Point, N.C., which was widely attended and allowed Marty to reconnect with many colleagues and friends via Zoom. Marty was a dear friend to many and had friends even from elementary school whom he cherished and spoke to weekly.

He is survived by his longtime companion, Tami Capriotti of Stonington; his two sons, Jake Berkowitz of New York, N.Y. and Noah Berkowitz of Mystic; a brother, Lloyd Berkowitz of Boca Raton, Fla.; and a sister, Amy Manoli of Beverly, Mass.

His family will receive relatives and friends 11 a.m. to noon Monday, Jan. 10, from at the Mystic Funeral Home located on Route 1 in Mystic. A noon service will immediately follow at the funeral home. Face masks are required when entering the funeral home. Following his service, Marty will be buried at the Elm Grove Cemetery, Mystic.
