Mary Hopkins Obituary

New London - Mary Helen Hopkins, a devoted educator, beloved mother, grandmother, and trailblazer, passed away peacefully Oct. 12, 2025, at her home in New London. She was 92 years old.

Born Sept. 6, 1933, and raised in Abbeville, S.C., Mary was the cherished daughter of the late Charles and Henrietta Blount. A bright and determined student, she graduated from Allen University in Columbia, S.C., in 1957. She later earned a Master's Degree in Education from the University of Connecticut, demonstrating her lifelong commitment to learning and academic excellence.

Mary moved to Connecticut in the late 1950s, where she became one of the first African American educators in Groton. She dedicated over three decades to teaching English at Fitch Middle School, from 1960 until her retirement in 1993. Her impact in the classroom extended far beyond academics-she saw teaching as a calling and took pride in mentoring, coaching, and guiding her students toward success. Her influence continues to resonate in the lives of those she taught.

Throughout her life, Mary was active in both professional and civic organizations. She was a proud member of the Groton Education Association, Connecticut Education Association, National Education Association, National Council of Negro Women, NAACP, and the Elks Club, among others. Her service to the community and her peers was marked by a deep sense of purpose and compassion.

Mary had a zest for life and loved to travel, entertain, cook, read, and play board games. Above all, she cherished the time spent with her family and friends, always bringing warmth, wisdom, and laughter to every gathering.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Raymond Hopkins; and her parents, Charles and Henrietta Blount. She is survived by her devoted daughter, Mrs. Audrey L. Richardson; her son-in-law, Dave Richardson; granddaughters, Lael Richardson and Gabrielle Richardson; great-grandson Gemellus Marin; and a host of dear friends and extended family members.

Mary Helen Hopkins leaves behind a legacy of excellence, resilience, and unwavering love. Her life will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, 2025, at the United Methodist Church, 130 Broad St., New London, with joy, remembrance, and gratitude for the many lives she touched.

Her legacy endures-in every student she taught, every life she influenced, and every heart that carries her memory forward.

Yesterday

Dear Mrs. Hopkins, you are one of my all time favorites! I think of you from time to time from when I was in your classroom. Sometimes you tried to be stern when you needed to be, but I could see and feel the smile and laughter behind your look of authority. I remember in junior high school you asked me to make you soft peanut butter cookies. I hope you were not disappointed. You have earned your heavenly reward, and are reunited with your loved ones who were waiting patiently for your arrival. You are a treasure. Certainly one that I will never forget. God be with your family as they mourn your passing. Mrs. Hopkins, you are loved.
