Mary Metcalf Obituary

New London - Mary Temple King Metcalf departed this world, at age 93, Oct. 15, 2025, in New London, where she resided. She was the daughter of Frances Fields Johnson and William F. Johnson, both residents of New London. She is predeceased by her sister Toiline Miller; and brother Victor Johnson.

"Temple," as she was called to those who knew her the longest, was an accomplished seamstress, who attended a tailoring school in N.Y.C., directly after graduating from Chapman Tech High School in 1950. Upon graduating from tailoring school, she married and had three children with her first husband, son Michael W. King (Amsterdam, NL), son William "Bill" King, and daughter Priscilla King (New London).

Temple worked hard to provide for her children, as a single mother. She was able to buy a house on Pequot Avenue in 1961, where she raised her three children. She worked for SNET (Southern New England Telephone Company) as a switchboard operator and later as a customer service representative. She retired from Pacific Bell in California, and later became a million-dollar real estate agent in Memphis, Tenn.

Later in life, she sought answers and found comfort in the teachings of the Jehovah Witness congregation, which she was a member until her death.

Special recognition is given to her son, Bill, who tirelessly was devoted to his mother throughout the years.

At her request, there will be no service. We thank many for their support and kind words during this time.

Priscilla and family. I condole with you in the passing of your dear, beautiful, sweet mother. May she rest in peace. She and I were next door neighbors when I lived in The Farmington Condominiums. Your Uncle Victor walked me across the street on Montauk Avenue on my first day of school at Nameaug back in the 60's. Such genuinely kind people they were. The Lord be with you all as your endeavor to face the days that are before you. My love to all.
