Matthew Sheridan Obituary

Winthrop - Matthew Carson Sheridan, 56, having been lucky and cursed, died Feb. 18, 2024, after way more than nine lives - surviving exciting adventures and dangerous incidents. His parents, the late Kathleen (Dolezal) and Francis "Jerry" Sheridan, should have known his path in life would be a bit unexpected as he was born Aug. 20, 1967, after a long circuitous route through the riots in New Haven.

Matt was often found on the roof of the barn, taking everything apart or jumping his bike over stone walls. His success rate was on par with Evel Knievel. Despite the failed jumps, multiple crashes, bruises and permanent scars, he would always try again. This determination and stubbornness were recurring themes and those who knew and loved him would shake their heads, sigh or just yell at him in frustration especially his sister Kimberly Sheridan of Northampton, Mass. Fortunately, Matt met and married someone who would put up with and join in on his antics, Cheryl (Fogg) Sheridan. They left for Egypt, for Matt's work with Ocean Surveys, right after their wedding and continued their adventures from a safari in Africa and scuba diving on the Siani to Christmas Markets in Frankfurt. They traveled far and wide, built a home (Winthrop) and made the perfect combo: Cheryl cooked, and Matt ate.

Cheryl's family: her late father Kenneth Fogg; mother Nathalie (Currier) Fogg, East Lyme; brother Russell and wife Anu, Old Lyme; as well as her sister Pamela Fogg and husband Reinhold Lange, Bristol, Vt.; and nephews, Jonah Godfrey-Fogg, Harry Godfrey-Fogg and Edgar Sherman put up with and supported all the antics, if not active participants. Matt, despite saying he disliked the moniker "handy," proved to be nothing but - fixing everything he could get his hands on in his jam-packed workshop behind the house. He was comfortable behind the wheel of a boat with a nephew in his lap or four-wheeling with passengers (reluctant and enthusiastic) in his Bronco. Matt was endlessly curious about the world and could be equal parts kind, supportive and a pain in the you-know-what to all of the people in his sphere.

In lieu, of flowers, please consider some organizations close to Matt's heart: the Deep River Historical Society, the Community Music School Scholarship Fund (Centerbrook) or PKDcure.org.
