It's been a year since Mike crossed over into the next world. Mike had the the drive and competitive intensity of an Olympic Athlete. In music, sports, carpentry, pool, horse shoes, and more. He lived the life of the blues with a determination like no other. So talented and beloved by friends in the Blues, a Blues Music Scholarship has been established in his name by the CT Blues Society. His band has carried on without him as the "Mike Crandall Tribute Band" Playing fundraisers a few times per year to fund this Scholarship to be awarded yearly to disadvantaged youth with recognized blues talent. His intensity for life will not be forgotten.

Mike was one of my most challenging (and therefore favorite) students because of his unbounded energy. I am so sorry that he passed at such a young age and send my condolences to all who knew him. I have no doubt Mike lived each day to the fullest and probably laughed at something every day...a life well-lived.

Back in the mid-seventies I lived across the street from Mike on Babcock Rd. He would stop over now and then to visit. Winter came in and the fun began. Snowbiling with Greg, Mike's Grandmother (Nannie) and Grandfather ( Fatboy,)
( His nicknames) Several neighbors in the area. I recall one storm when Dan Gribbon, ( Uncle Guggie)
Mike and myself built a 10 foot snowman. Mike rolled a ball of snow twice as big as a beach ball, then holding it tight, on top of my brothers shoulders and set it place. A job well done...until it wasn't. It rolled off and the process began with success. We laughed and topped it off with a beer. There were many great times especially pitching horseshoes at Fatboy and Nannies house in Ledyard. Can't begin to count how many matches we all were involved in. Mike was a tough competitor not only slinging horseshoes put playing pool as well. Any one who played against him, usually remembered it !!
I recall one of his performances at the Knickerbocker in Westerly on Halloween. Yes, standing room only as usual. He came over to see me at the break and introduced me to his friend " the three-headed man, winner of best costume. Another one of Mike's funnier moments. He was a man who always had a smile, Never ever did I see him upset or angry with anyone. A characteristic not seen in most people. Rest in Peace. When the Angels sing in Heaven you will be there to join them.

I am so sorry to hear of Mike's passing. My brother Greg and I and played many pick-up basketball games with him. We dubbed him "Hook Shot Mike". He would always take at least one during a game. We could see it coming and 99% of the time he made it. We had so much fun. And we had no idea about his musical talents until we went to a club one time, I think it was the Brown Derby, and there he was playing the harp. He treated my brother and I like kings that night.
RIP, Mike. You might be gone, but you will never be forgotten by me and my brother.

Mike is at the center of many great times I've had enjoying the blues at Dunny's in Massachusetts, at Rhode Island's beach bars, and in lots of places in Connecticut. Whenever Mike Crandall was in the house, I knew the party was really going to rock. He was such a great performer, literally howling. As both his fan and his friend, I will miss Mike and forever remember him.

I met Mike only twice while he was visiting Danny and Bridget MaGuire in Fredericksburg Virginia, as he did as often as he could. I found him to be a kind and warm man and he treated me as if he had known me for years. My thoughts go out to all his family and friends. Mike keep playing those wonderful blues on your harmonica.

To my NS family of friends, I am sad now for all the time we won't have Mike in our lives. Mike and I met in kindergarten in Uncasville and then again in NS in 6th grade. Danny mentioned the community's introduction to Mike's early harmonica playing, so I was his early jam partner on many inebriated nights at our old upright piano in the basement. We played 1,4,5"s ad nosium and always poked away at "Take The Long Way Home" so Mike could wail away, and then we'd pass out! But Mike quickly mastered bending notes and I knew with his incredible drive and passion for perfection, he'd be good. Ultimately, man, he obtained near perfection didn't he. He use to call me at college, wouldn't say a word, just blow riffs up and down his harp, and then he'd hang up. This he did over and over for three or more years. It was hilarious.
Last summer Mike helped me rebuild a deck, not an easy job. He referred to me as "Jeffrey", I ended up quite overstimulated as his flunky just trying to keep up with his orders, but "he" built that deck in two days! You guys know that personality I know you do. God bless you Kelly!
Over the years, we spent hundreds of hours together, basketball Frisbee, camping, concerts, Mike was truly a member of our family, he loved my mother's gentleness and always asked after the whole family later on when we talked. He was proud of his brother Mark's accomplishments as a fisherman, "best fisherman I ever saw" and knowing how they had percevered their younger years, I frequently told him, "you and Mark, you're survivors". He bragged about Kelly, "the sweetest girl" and all the adventures they went on. Everything for Mike was just "jucy"!
To Danny, Kelly, all the friends I hope to meet, you hear a song with a harp in it, that's Mike smiling on us all. - Best, Jeff

While not knowing Mike well and while I was going to click Friend (we both love and are passionate about the blues) the truth is I would have to say we were acquaintances. Like everyone, when I heard Mike passed over, I was in total shock and disbelief. And then I hear it happened while he was performing and in Montville it blows me away as I had planned to be there on the 18th, but another matter prevented that. And while it was shocking to me and so many others, and especially shocking and painful to his family, friends, and soulmate Kelly it was comforting knowing that he was stricken while doing what he loved, performing for an audience blowing blues harp and singing with that incredible voice of his. The very first time I can remember seeing Mike he was blowing harp and belting out songs at a theater in Stafford on stage with Brandt Taylor and Liviu Pop. I remember not only how good he was, but how much he enjoyed performing on that stage, entertaining his friends. Mike had to go over his allotted time for at least a half hour. They kept trying to get him off the stage, but he wouldn't he was having way too much fun. So, as much as he will be missed, please try and take comfort in knowing that he went while doing what he loved. As the producer of Blues on Broadway at the Norwich Arts Center it makes me feel better knowing that we had Mike at the Donald L. Oat Theater as our December 2021 Blues on Broadway performer. And he was having fun, almost as much fun as the people in the audience, a number of whom were seeing and hearing him for the first time. And liking the place, I remember him saying geez, I never knew this place existed (something said too often). And when we were talking, Brandt reminding Mike about Stafford. Hope you're having fun blowing harp with the other greats that went before you. Until we meet again. Rest in Blues.

In the mid 60's, i remember going to the home of Gordon and Helen Macdonald, and seeing these two little kids in diapers running around the house at a thousand miles per hour, jumping off the furniture, bouncing off the walls, i laughed and knew that nothing could change that.
This was where his mother Terry grew up with a sister and two brothers.
A few days ago, his uncle Gus, called and told me of now. Early today, i called Gus to tell him about today's print.
In the hearts of many people, especially those most close to him, there is a time of disbelief and sadness.
There is now a small mark on the heart. But this mark is like a 'note'. But not like a note that can be put on sheet music, because this note on the heart is the only perfect note.
Robert Zimmerman once said, 'we're all gonna be there at the million dollar bash'.
We'll catch up to you brother!
My condolences, love and respect to the entire family.

Dear family, the loss of Mike is beyond belief, Bridget, Kate, Patrick and I are devastated. My brother who is a life force is gone. I still remember me and Mike walking down Babcock almost 50 years ago. Mike was making the worst sound ever heard out of his new harmonica. I snatched it out of his hand and told him, "if you don´t learn how to play this thing I am going to throw it in the swamp!" Well you know the rest of the story, Mike became a master of the harp! We will meet again my brother!
