Nancy Schmidt Obituary

Niantic - Nancy (Hayes) Schmidt passed away peacefully Aug. 28,2024, in Waterford, after a long illness. She was born in Peterborough, N.H., and lived in Westerly, R.I., raising her children and being an active member of the community.

She was a member of the Dunn's Corners Church for over 40 years and more recently the Groton-New London Church.

Nancy was predeceased by her husband Gerrit; and son Peter. She is survived by her daughters, Petra Wildenhain and Karin Mahoney; and son Paul Schmidt; as well as six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother Donald Hayes; and sisters, Susan Wilkinson, Kathie Hodgkinson and Linda Olsen.

A Celebration of her Life will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, at the Groton-New London Church, 151 Shewville Road, Old Mystic. Burial will be at a later date at the Hayes family plot in Chocorua, N.H.

Nancy made me smile. She may have had trouble getting her thoughts out loud enough for me to hear as I have a hearing problem, but I knew she was reaching out with all of her heart to say hello to me.
