Norman Edwards Obituary

Amagansett, N.Y. - Norman Conklin Edwards Jr., formerly of Gales Ferry, Juneau, Alaska, Novato, Calif., Ketchikan, Alaska, Charleston, S.C., Tallahassee, Fla., San Fransisco, and Grand Haven, Mich., died on Jan. 19, 2011, at his home in Amagansett, succumbing to stage-four brain tumor (glioblastoma).

He was born on Sept. 7, 1946, at Southampton Hospital to Elsie and the late Norman Edwards Sr.

He is survived byhis mother, Elsie Edwards of Amagansett; his wife, Lynda Edwards of Amagansett; siblings, Linda Baker and Bruce Edwards; children, Samuel of Scottsdale, Ariz., Elan Eddington of Tokyo, Japan, Sarai Timothy and Zachariah, both of Juneau, Alaska; and 11 grandchildren.

Norman was a decorated veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard and retired as captain after 30 years of service. He was a licensed master mariner for unlimited vessel tonnages, a former commodore for Coast Guard Squadron 42, commanding officer of four Coast Guard cutters and International Ice Patrol, and numerous other leadership roles. He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in various leadership roles in Juneau and most recently in the Riverhead, N.Y. branch. He was an elected member of the East Hampton Town Board of Trustees.

Norman was a graduate of East Hampton High School, the Coast Guard Academy, and earned a bachelor of science degree in oceanography at Florida State University and a master's degree of physical oceanography.

After retiring, he was a commercial fisherman. Norman was the great-grandson of Joshua B. Edwards, the last man to harpoon a whale from an open boat in the Atlantic off Amagansett and a pioneer in the menhaden, or "bunker" fishery.

There will be viewing hours from 7 to 9 p.m. this evening at the Yardley & Pino Funeral Home on Montauk Highway in East Hampton. The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. on Monday at the Amagansett Presbyterian Church, also on Montauk Highway, followed by a graveside service at Cedar Lawns Cemetery in East Hampton.

Memorial donations, in lieu of flowers, may be made to the East Hampton Trustees' "Winter Flounder" project.

Hi Sam,
Joyce Brown sent me an email informing me that your Dad had passed away. I am so sorry for your loss. Your Dad was a great guy and such an asset to the Coast Guard. I still remember meeting you when you came to the Center and thinking how much you remind me of your Dad. May wonderful memories of your Dad bring you and your family comfort. You're in my thoughts and prayers. Take care.

Elan and family - I am not sure there was a man more proud of his family than your dad. You could see how happy you all made him from the shine in his eyes when he talked about you. I will always remember him. Thank you for sharing this sweet man with our little family. Ilene, Marko, Jacob, Finn and Harper

Dear Lynda, Samuel,Elan,Sarai & Zack,& family, I am so sorry to hear the news about Norm. I remember our fond memories of being stationed together both in Charleston, & Gales Ferry. Norm had so much zest for life with his love for running, and his willingness to help whenever needed. My whale carving that he crafted and wall collage, he assisted with, will always be a great memory for me of the wonderful friend he was. I look forward to getting together very soon, Lynda...Love, Toni Hylton, Montclair, VA

I was saddened to read of your loss. Captain Edwards was one of the finest CG officers that I had an opportunity to work with and for. It was a privilege to have know him as a fellow officer, and I know he loved and treasured his family. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Lynda and family: John and I want to send our condolences. We reside in Texas now. we regret that we can't be there for you at this time. Norm was one of the great ones. As our home teacher, he went beyond the service that he needed to. I remember being pregnant with Jannelle and our dog had fleas. I needed the lawn sprayed and didn't have the money to hire someone. Norm came over and sprayed my yard. Every time we would see him. He was there with a comforting smile and a great big hug. John always admired Norm for all that he accomplished in life. The world has lost a great man and John and I have lost a great friend. With tears in my eyes and sorrow in my heart, much love to you and the family, John and Priscilla Klekotka
