Born in Norwich on Sept. 19, 1909, he was the son of the late Peter E. and Victoria (Butkiewicz) Labenski Sr.
Together with his wife, they founded Labenski Funeral Home in Norwich in 1938 on Lower Cliff St., across from the Chelsea Bank, and then, in 1943, relocated to 107 Boswell Ave. In 1960, they were joined by their son and have continued as a family owned business for the past 68 years. Peter was the oldest Connecticut licensed funeral director and embalmer. Until this past August, he was independent and still driving himself wherever he needed to be.
For many years he enjoyed duck pin bowling and was successful on the local and national level. He also enjoyed gardening and his crossword puzzles.
A 1927 graduate of Norwich Free Academy, he played football and baseball. He also played shortstop and pitched in various leagues in the area. He was inducted into the Norwich Sports Hall of Fame in 1978.
He was a life member of Thamesville A.C., Loyal Order of the Moose #950, Knights of Columbus Council #13, and the Norwich Lodge of Elks #430. He was also a lifelong member of St. Joseph Church.
On No. 20, 1940, at St. Joseph Church in Norwich, he was united in marriage to Frances (Szalkowski) Labenski, who died on Oct. 2, 1994.
Surviving are their two children and their spouses, Teresa and William Kirschenheiter of Reno, Nev., and Peter C. and Rhonda Labenski of Lisbon; four grandchildren, Dawn, Kim, Victoria, and Luke Labenski and his wife, Parivash, and his great-grandson, Javid Labenski; a brother, Dr. Adam C. Labenski of Norwich; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Bronislaw "Brownie" Labenski and Stephen Labenski; also two sisters, Stella Wierzbinski and Josephine Socha.
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 9 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 5, 2007, at St Joseph Church, 120 Cliff St., Norwich. There is no visitation. Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to St. Joseph School, 120 Cliff St., Norwich CT 06360.
Arrangements are by the Labenski Funeral Home.
