Richard Hurley Obituary

Old Lyme - Richard J. Hurley, age 92, a native of The Bronx, N.Y., and longtime resident of Old Lyme, passed away Nov. 22, 2024. Born in 1932, the son of David F. and Ursula Hurley, Richard lived a life marked by service, dedication and love for his family, friends and community.

Richard was preceded in death by his beloved wife of nearly 60 years, Florence Hurley, whom he married Feb. 4, 1956, in Bridgeport. He was also preceded in death by his siblings, David Hurley and Ann Link. Richard is survived by his daughter Linda Brophy of Westbrook; and his son Michael Hurley and his wife, Julie, of Waterford. He also leaves behind four grandchildren: Allison Brophy (Fernando Romero), Megan Millar (Alden Millar), Sean Hurley and Claire Hurley; and three great-grandchildren, Abigail and Chase Millar, and Hudson Richard Brophy Romero.

A proud U.S. Army veteran, Richard enlisted in 1950, and served during the Korean War. After his military service, he dedicated over 24 years to the Connecticut State Police, joining the force in 1957 and retiring as a Lieutenant. He was a lifetime member and past president of the Hundred Club of Connecticut, a testament to his commitment to service and dedication to the community.

Richard enjoyed boating on Rogers Lake; he was a beloved member of Black Hall Country Club, and a fixture at the LT. River Breakfast Club. He also looked forward to gathering with friends, including those at the "Broken Wing Club" every Friday for dinner, where his wit and Irish charm were always a highlight.

Richard's greatest love was for his family. He treasured time spent with his grandchildren, attending their sporting events, enjoying vacations, and making lasting memories at the family cabin in Vermont, where he proudly taught them to ski, creating memories that will be forever cherished.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, in Christ the King Church, Old Lyme. Burial with military honors will follow at Duck River Cemetery, Old Lyme. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Richard's memory to the Hundred Club of Connecticut at 119 Oakwood Drive, Glastonbury, CT 06033.
