Robert Schuch Obituary

Tampa, Fla - Robert J. "Bob" Schuch, 66, passed away peacefully at home August 18, 2022, surrounded by his loving family. Bob endured a brief but courageous battle with cancer. He was born in New London June 21, 1956, son of the late John and Anna Mae (McNulty) Schuch.

He is lovingly remembered by his wife of 32 years Sherry (Civitello); daughter Kimberly and her children, Aidan and Annalise; and daughter Alyson Leonard, her husband Zachary and their son Everett.

Bob is fondly remembered for his dedication and love of his family and his zest for life. Being a husband, father and grandfather was his greatest joy. He was the best "Pop Pop" and will especially be remembered for all the times he spent swimming while showing off his unforgettable can opener. He had a tremendous sense of humor, the consummate prankster and was always the life of the party, a one-of-a-kind guy. Bob made friends easily and sustained many lifelong friendships. He was long known as "Magic Bob" for his frisbee free styling which he enjoyed competing and performing his long list of frisbee tricks. He will be sorely missed and forever loved.

Bob was a longtime resident of Southeastern Connecticut having grown up in New London. Bob attended St. Mary's School, St. Bernard High School and the University of Connecticut. During high school, he worked at the family business, Schuch Sunoco Service, in Hodges Square. After college, Bob worked as a licensed professional civil engineer for over 40 years with many different firms throughout Connecticut. He started as an employee, then became a partner and eventually founded his own business, Schuch Engineering. Having relocated to Tampa, Fla. in 2017, Bob most recently was employed by the City of Tampa as an experienced engineer for the Mobility Department.

Bob was passionate about his love for design and drawings. This was most exemplified by his reputation amongst his colleagues as he was both well respected and well liked. Although a lifelong Yankee fan, Bob became an avid fan of all Tampa sports teams after moving to Florida. In his free time, he would be found at his favorite rock concert, dying his beard different colors depending on the holiday or gameday, and relishing in his favorite seafood with a tropical cocktail in hand.

Bob leaves behind family members: Francine Schuch of Waterford, Virginia Levasseur (Emile) of Norwich, Thomas (Catherine) of East Lyme, William (Regina) of Farmington, and Joanne Davis of Waterford. Bob also leaves behind many adoring nieces, nephews, cousins, and other family members too numerous to name.

A celebration of his life for family and friends will be held at 2 p.m. Oct. 1, 2022, at the Montville Polish Club, 85 Maple Ave, Uncasville. There will be a short memorial service, time for sharing stories of Bob, and fellowship after. There will also be a celebration of Bob's life in Tampa at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in his honor to the Kidney Cancer Association, PO Box 676226, Dallas, TX 75267 or a charity of your choice.

On Bob's behalf, the family would like to thank all of the staff at Moffitt Cancer Center and Lifepath Hospice for their compassionate care.

To the entire Schuch family,
I was so very saddened to hear of Bob´s passing. My family and I lived on Warren Street for many years and as you may remember, our family´s were pretty close. Please accept my sincere condolences and know that he will be missed! I last saw Bob about 6 years ago and even though we hadn´t seen each other in many years, we were both overjoyed to see one another! We reminisced about our childhood and how fortunate we were as kids to grow up in such a wonderful neighborhood! May he rest in peace and may his memory be for a blessing! ps: I can still hear his laugh!

I hired "Bobby" for his first job in the field of Civil Engineering. He was a good learner and developed into an Engineer capable of leading projects. I and the staff thought a lot of Bob and we were disappointed to see him leave to work for a competitor. We threw him an office party and gave him a one in a kind gift.

Bob Schuch will forever be regarded as my good friend, UConn Ultimate Frisbee teammate that I caught TD passes tossed accurately from the hands of Magic Bob, made 2 am lightbulb replenishment runs from UConn dormitories to replace the ones we broke in Litchfield Hall, cranking The Grateful Dead on the turntable, enjoying many a laugh with his infectious humor, seeing him pull an all-nighter for a final exam and acing it, and hearing of his enjoyment of family and business success. Bob will never be duplicated and always remembered!

Obituaries don´t usually come anywhere close to conveying the essence of someone and their life. But wow, this really DOES perfectly capture the playful, real humanity and passion of Magic Bob, and the impact he´s had on so many of us. Reading it makes me smile.... classic Bob! Thank you for sharing this first testament to his joyful life during such a tremendously difficult time. So much love!

I am very sad to hear of Bob´s passing. I had known Bob for many, many years as an engineer working for his client´s projects in East Lyme and southeastern Connecticut. I thoroughly enjoyed working with Bob and respected both his work and work ethic toward producing the best designs possible. Bob was a conscientious professional engineer! And he was both a pleasure and a "hoot " to work with. I first met Bob when he was still performing his frisbee "magic". I always called him Frisbee Bob and we had many laughs together. I was disappointed when he moved to Florida. I´ve worked with many engineers in SE Conn and was sad to lose a good one.
I extend my condolences to his family and wish them well in the coming days.
