He was born on Sept. 19, 1935 in New London, the son of Siegfried "Gus" and Bertha Melesk Sonnenburg.
Bob was married to Katherine White on Sept. 8, 1979 in Mystic.
A 1953 graduate of the Fitch High School in Groton, he had also attended the University of Connecticut.
Bob was an avid fisherman and boater who had a love of the outdoors and gardening. He was a Red Sox fan and he loved his and Kate's animals.
Bob was a very active life member and past exalted ruler of the Groton Lodge of Elks and a life member of the Groton Sportsman's Club.
He served in the U. S. Navy and had retired as a planner from the Electric Boat Company in Groton in 1997.
Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Robin Snelgrove, of Stonington, and Rebecca Renski, of North Stonington; six grandchildren, Mike and Matt Dyer, David Renski Jr., Michelle and C.J. Hallisey and Tyler Snelgrove.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Byles- Groton Memorial Home, 310 Thames St. Visiting hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
