Robert Whittle Obituary

Mystic - Robert Frederick Whittle, 84, who operated the last commercial farm in Mystic, passed away on April 2, 2016. Bob finished his work for the day on Whittle's Willow Spring Farm, sat back in his favorite recliner, and died peacefully in his sleep. He has finished his work here on earth, but his legacy will live forever. His family, its agricultural business, and his service to the nation were the cornerstones of his life. Bob's example of leadership, hard work, integrity, loyalty, optimism, and friendship shaped the values of his cohesive family and lifelong friends.

Bob was the second oldest of Frederick and Charlotte Whittle's seven children. He was born on Feb. 25, 1932, in a midwife's house on the corner of Allyn St. and West Mystic Ave., in Mystic.

Bob's grandfather Robert began operating Whittles' Willow Spring Farm in 1908. Bob grew up working for his father, Fred, tilling the soil at a young age. He loved the farm deeply. The crops, orchards and the very earth were a part of him. Everything about the outdoor work shaped his character, and the fall harvest was his favorite season. In the course of his agricultural career, he attained the skills of a mechanic, plumber, electrician, carpenter, and an accountant. Today the farm continues to run under the leadership of his brother, William, son, Rick, and grandson, Phil, totaling five generations of continuous ownership of the farm.

Bob joined Battery A, 238th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Gun Battalion of the Connecticut National Guard at the age of 17, and one year later, in 1950, his unit mobilized and prepared to take part in the Korean War. The U.S. Army offered Bob a farm exemption, so that he could support the home front and not deploy, but out of loyalty to his fellow soldiers, Bob refused and gave the exemption to a friend of his who was already married and wanted to stay home with his family. The unit did deploy, but instead of going to Korea, spent the year in Japan. During his time in the military Bob earned the Japan Occupation Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal.

Upon his return, he bought a 1956 Thunderbird and drove to California for adventure. While he was there, Bob worked in the U.S. Postal Service and was paid to be an extra in a Hollywood movie. He returned from California and spent the rest of his career working on the family farm in Mystic.

Bob's loyalty and bravery were on display when he saved the lives of two friends. The first time, he risked his own life by sliding into icy water to pull a friend who broke his arm in an industrial diving accident and was drowning in fast current, unconscious in the water. The second time, he saved a friend who was drowning in a rip tide. He exemplified integrity and trustworthiness. A handshake from Bob Whittle meant that you had a deal, and one that would be honored. He was a man of his word and his commitments were always followed by action. He was an optimist who saw the good in everything. Bob treated everyone with dignity and respect.

Bob served on the board of directors of the Old Mystic Fire Department and as the umpire coordinator for Babe Ruth baseball. He was a member of the Mystic Chapter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), the Groton Elks, and the American Legion. At his request, Willow Spring Farm also sponsored Troop 2 of the Boy Scouts of America.

He had an enthusiasm for life that was contagious. He had many hobbies that he enjoyed and shared with his children and grandchildren. These included traveling, hunting, skiing, scuba diving, motorcycling, snowmobiling, bowling, and restoring antique cars. He traveled extensively around the world and loved spending time with his wife, Brigitte, in his cabin in New Hampshire.

Bob married Brigitte in January 1965. They have been happily married for 51 years. Bob was incredibly proud of his two children. Rick has remained on the farm and is also the president of Allied Snow Removal Corp., a statewide operation that provides employment to hundreds of workers. Bob Jr. is a West Point graduate, an active duty colonel in the U.S. Army, and a veteran of four combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Bob is also survived by five grandchildren, Frederick III, Phillip, Olivia, Austin, and Avery. In addition, Bob is survived by six brothers and sisters, Elizabeth Hill of LaGrange, Ky., Dorothy Duguid of Raleigh, N.C., Cecelia Basque of Martha's Vineyard, Mass., William Whittle of Mystic, Richard Whittle of Groton, and Carol Pratt of Mystic.

Calling hours will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 7, at Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl St., Mystic. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 8, at St. Mary Mother of the Redeemer Church, 69 Groton Long Point Road, Groton.

Donations may be made in memory of Bob Whittle to the Mystic Chapter of the VFW.

Very sad to hear about BOB whittle. I met him while I was looking for a home in Mystic,Ct His produce was the best! HE ALWAYS HAD A GREAT SMILE" His memories will live on thru his children.

April 14, 2016

I am deeply saddened by the death of Bobby Whittle. I remember his beautiful smile as he would pass by our farm in his cute little T-Bird, waving to me as he passed by. I was but a child, growing up on the old Chesebro Farm across the road from the stand.
The last time I saw him was about 10 years ago, when I was "home" for my high school reunion from Fitch High School. I wouldn't have recognized him, but I did recognize his beautiful smile when he came out to greet me at the stand.
I worked at the stand selling fruits and vegetables with Connie Silva for a couple of years during high school and got to know the whole family better.
They are a wonderful family, Tom, Fred, Lucy, Charlotte and all gone now, but the memories from childhood remain.

"Bobby" as we used to call him gifted us with a legacy not known by many in this day and age. He learned his work ethics working the fields and orchards of Willow Spring Farm alongside his dad Fred. Those attributes aside, my family fondly remembers Mrs Castagna (mom/nanny) brewing iced tea knowing Bobby would soon come to her door after plowing the potato field. We always loved the gentle sound of the tractor saying it's finally spring and Bob's planting. My boys,Mark, Jeff, Scott and Chris loved worked on the farm, and especially getting rides on the back of the tractor. Many sweet and simple memories have stayed in our hearts from the long time ago. "Bobby" we all thank you for giving us something to remember you by.With love, Elaine Turner Runkel, Mark, Scott and Chris Turner

The greatest blessing is of passing peacefully. So sorry for this loss. I remember as a kid my mom and dad bringing the family for Apple picking and those hot days of June for strawberry picking. Happy memories. I hope the farm will continue to enlighten and bring joy to others. I still enjoy visiting. Farmers are rock stars. No farms no food. Love and peace. Joanna Breton

Bob Whittle was God's best example of what a man should live to be. His obituary has already used the most fitting words to describe him... honorable, hardworking, loyal, and honest, to name a few.

For many years I have heard my Dad talk of his relationship with Bob and the entire Whittle family. From Dad's first job on the farm picking potatoes, to the friendship, guidance, respect, and love that was extended to him over the years. Dad never forgot any of it and deeply cherished it. No matter how busy life got, you could always count on Bob to show up at just the right time.

Wishing the Whittle Family much peace and comfort in the days ahead, and may you continue the beautiful legacy that was started by an amazing yet humble man.

Dear Whittle Family, I am deeply saddened by the passing of "Bob". I hold many fond memories of Bob from my childhood years while growing up next to the "potato field" and "gravel pit". Bob always had a smile and a wave while passing by in his dump truck. Bob gave me my first job picking potato's then allowing me to work on the farm as I grew older. This where I learned how to drive, the old Ford weaving through the fields. Picking corn at 6:oo in the morning, strawberries, mud... Happy times were had when we swam in the pond next to his house and dove off the diving board. The laugh he had, deep, low, hearty, never forget.
Bob will be missed.

I was so saddened to learn of Bob's passing.
He certainly has left a legacy that will live on thru his family.
I remember Bob going down the road on the tractor, he always waved on the way past.
I also remember going to the farm stand for fruits and vegetables and Bob was never to busy to stop and chat with people.
I still visit the farm stand whenever I go back "home" and Brigitte greets me with a hug and a smile if she is there.
Sending the entire Whittle family my deepest sympathies at this time.

My thoughts and prayers are with Brigitte and the entire Whittle family. I still cherish the memories of when Bob and Brigitte would take over the farm in the Fall when I worked in the store many years ago. The cider would be flowing, the fireplace glowing and all was calm and well under Bob and Brigitte's leadership. I remember him chuckling over the occasional good-natured prank played on us girls, but will forever think of him waving from a tractor down the road or taking time out at the store to chat and share a laugh with my Dad. Such a nice man and what a legacy he has left...a beautiful farm and beautiful family. He will be missed.
