Roger C. Peterson

New London - After a courageous battle with cancer, Roger Peterson passed away peacefully at home Jan. 16, 2025. He was born in Portland, Maine, Feb. 24, 1943, to Raymond Peterson and Elizabeth Dunbar Peterson.

In his early 20s, he served in the U.S. Coast Guard, a chapter that set the tone for a lifetime connected to the sea.

He spent most of his life before retirement in Niantic where he enjoyed countless hours on the water - clamming, sailing and savoring the beauty of Niantic Bay.

He's survived by his wife Janice, his friend and love of 55 years and with whom he shared a lifetime of joy and deep companionship. He also leaves behind his cherished children, Erik Peterson (Anne) and Emily Adams (Matt); as well as his four legged companions, Rosco and Clementine, the cat.

Roger spent many years locally in the car business, but he was proudest of his work in marine insurance. A perfect reflection of his lifelong passion for the sea. In retirement, he worked as a custodian for East Lyme Schools.

In 2011, Roger and Janice relocated to New London. He faithfully monitored marine traffic from a perfect vantage point.

When his dear friend moved upstairs in 2018, he resumed his pool playing days at the Thames Club. Times he described as truly glorious. In his later years, he was grateful for his daily conversations with his son and to be a witness to his daughter's wedding at N.Y. City Hall. An avid reader and gifted conversationalist, Roger could light up any room with his stories, wit and charm.

A Celebration of his Life will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 14, at the Thames Club in New London. All are welcome to attend to honor the life of a man who loved deeply, lived fully and left a lasting mark on all who knew him. We miss him.
