Shirley L. Deck

Groton - Shirley L. Deck, age 59, of Groton, passed away at her residence Tuesday, May 2, 2023. She was born in Baltimore, Md., June 7, 1963, the daughter of Ralph H. and Shirley Goss Magalis.

Shirley was married to Gary S. Deck Aug. 5, 2006 in Groton.

She had been a cook for many years at the Bacon Hinkley Home in New London, and had worked at The Day Paper for over 15 years.

Besides her husband, she is survived by her daughters, Arrie L. Nelson and Colleen Pero both of Groton, Shirley L. Herren of New London, and Carrie Genua of Centerbrook; her son Damien Deck of Preston; and her brother Robert Magalis of E. Hartford. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Daemion Startz, Nicoli and Kameron Pray, Ariyana Nelson, Miya-Layla and Ecabella Genua, Allison, Emily and C.J. Avery and Sophia Deck. She was predeceased by her daughter, Felicia Herrn; her brothers, William and Ralph; and her sisters, Dorothy Pero and Grace Burgess; and her brother-in-law Anthony Pero.

A memorial service for Shirley and her daughter Felicia will be held 5 p.m. Friday, May 19, at the Byles-Groton Memorial Home, 310 Thames Street. There are no visiting hours. Please visit www.byles.com to sign the guestbook or share a memory with the family.
