I only heard about Steve's passing a few weeks ago whe I read about the passing of his Dad. Unlike most of the messages here, my memories of Steve go back to Sunset Ridge School where he an I were classmates from kidnergarten to 6th grade. We went to catechism class together. Everyone is right about Steve's personality as he was friendly as a kid and loved to laugh. I followed his career and knew about his toe and many field goals. He has left us far too soon.

I was shocked to see the notice of Steve's passing in the 'TAPS' listing in the CG Retirees newsletter. Much belated condolences to all his family and friends. My fault for not keeping contact with people after I retired and letting Alumni A'ssn lapse.

I just heard, today, that Steve had died. He was our 3rd Party Examiner for many years on the GRAND VICTORIA II. Over the years, we developed a friendship, and I was hoping he would be in town, tomorrow, for the ABS inspection, but instead I sadly learned of a good friend's passing. My deepest sympathy to Steve's family, friends and all who loved him. God bless... and Rest in Peace old friend.

To Steve's Family and Loved Ones, our heartfelt thanks for sharing one of the best persons we've ever know. After years and years and years of weekly phone calls, visits, beers, and talks on personal/ship/dog matters, we were expecting Steve to stay with us the week after he passed. There is a hole in our lives, always will be, and we're sure you understand that. God Bless Steve, and you.

As a classmate at the Coast Guard Academy Steve was the best. He was also a great football player. But most of all he was a great friend. That booming voice and big smile always brought a smile to my face. Steve was always ready to help no matter what was asked. He will be truly missed.

I met Steve in 1989 at CGHQ. We immediately became friends. The thing that I admired most about Steve was that he had a huge heart. He cared deeply about those around him, his Labs, the USCG and of course the passion for Indian motorcycles.
I saw him a few times over the years and looked forward to seeing him at Cruise Miami this year.
I miss him and think the world can use many more like him.

I have known Steve since the mid 1980’s. We shared a passion for marine inspection, though I could never match his talent. He set the standard by which others are measured. Like many others, I never had a conversation with him about inspection topics where I didn’t learn something new – he was a true master of his craft. I also deeply admired Steve for the way he embraced life after being told he might not survive more than five years due to his cancer. He remained optimistic and fully engaged in his many pursuits for fourteen years. I am grateful that he beat the initial prognosis, and that we were able to share his friendship for so much longer. I will miss him.

Steve will be missed by many many people in so many ways. For me, Steve showed how CGA cadets go on leave as he and his '75 classmates drove this swab from '78 down I95 for Thanksgiving. Then there was marine inspections to learn and MODU U. And unforgettable parties and phonecons about everything and anything from ships to motorcycles. Steve is already a legendary marine inspector and Coast Guard officer. But when we think back, he was so much more. We'll miss Steve. God bless him.

As fellow Connecticut residents, and football players, Steve and I got to know each other very well. When we later played together on the Dean of Academics team, we got to know each other even better. He was always entertaining, and informative...I would add legendary in terms of his football and marine safety accomplishments.
I am privileged to be able to speak on behalf of all the men and women of the United States Coast Guard in offering the family peace, prayers, and thanks for Steve's contibtions to our Service, and country.

I have known Steve since we were 18, but our paths only crossed occasionally. Whenever they did, I was always happy because he was such a powerful positive force. In recent years I learned first hand what a caring and good friend he could be as we tried to help another classmate in need. Steve and I had a long athletic and professional relationship.
We were wrestling partners at the academy. He was constantly trying to convince me to become his professional tag team partner.
I still smile at his outlook on life, his love of vintage motorcycles, old steam ships and Lab Rescue.
He will always be remembered by those who he encountered as a unique and genuine soul.

Life is like a journey, taken on a train,
with a pair of travelers at every window pane.
I may sit beside you, all the journey through,
or I may sit elsewhere, never knowing you.
But, if fate should have it that I sit by your side,
let's be pleasant travelers, it's so short a ride.
Steve, I hopped on the train with you 41 years ago in New London, CT. And, like so many others, the pain is great now that you've been selected to disembark much too soon.
But, thanks Cic - for making it ONE HELL OF A RIDE!

Steve Ciccalone passed away?!? Never! Some people are bigger than this life. Everyone that knew Steve knows that he was / is one of those rare people.
Gone? Not as long as I can remember waking up in the '61 Annex; seeing my roommate standing on top of the desk because some type of mini-explosive device went off in our room; and Steve (and Gary) standing at the door bent over in pain because he was laughing so hard.
Just one of a hundred fond memories!

Where to start, I guess at Casino Magic at the first hull inspection. I didn't meet Steve, I was met by two beautiful labs waiting patiently for him to return to that old grey van. I walked them up and down the levy while he finished up in the pilot house and then off to Coyotes. We are going to miss your stories and ballads, but most of all we are going to miss you. Steve, aka, Henderson, keep rolling down the road. You have touched so many hearts both two legged and four. I will honor you with a donation to the Lab Rescue group. In 1974, three of us went from East Hartford to the Coast Guard Academy, Steve from East Catholic; Gary Palmer and I from what was then know as Penney High. Steve Ciccalone was a legend during my high school years known throughout most of the state. His prowess in football were well known. But in the wrestling world, it was more, he was unbeatable. I wrestled and came in a second a lot. I wrestled Steve once and came in second very quickly. That he was such a force of nature, yet so open and loved was so much of Steve. Like others, Steve called me out of the blue this year -- joyful, painfully honest about our lives. Steve was vibrantly alive and always present in the moment -- what an example.

I have known Steve for over thirty years. We both served in the Coast Guard and became friends sharing many good times together.
I am shocked by his passing. We had spent the weekend before his death visiting him at his home. It was a great weekend with lots of time spent recalling the good old days.
Steve relayed all his fun plans for the future. He was in great spirits and looked great.
It is difficult to accept that he died just four days after we left.

Dear Joe, Kris and family;
Please accept My deepest sympathies. I am saddened to hear of Steve's passing. As a contemporary of Steve's, I remember closely following his football exploits as he worked his way to lofty heights, becoming the finest place kicker the Academy had ever known. I too, shared his love of Model A's, having lovingly restored a 30 deluxe coupe with the help of Ruby Dimesky, my Dad. I hope you find comfort in the fact that Steve had such an impact on so many. Being well remembered is the truest hallmark of a life "well lived". Rest in peace, Steve.
Lovingly,

The last time I talked to Steve it was just hours before he died. Little did we know that it was the last time we'd talk about early '28 Model A's, our children, our ladies, and what color to paint A495. We laughed about the Yeungling we would drink at Hershey in three weeks. We talked about Oshkosh and Marquette in the summer of 2012. We didn't know that would be the last call.
We will all miss Steve but also know that he will live on in all of us. His zest for life. His dedication to friends. His love for puppies like Bert.
So when I heard that you had died Steve I called because I knew that it was wrong. I heard your voice message and knew that soon you would answer and laugh in that deep tone of yours. I knew that we'd swap stories, talk sports and each drink a beer together 2,500 miles apart. But you didn't answer, Steve.
Good bye my brother. If I could hear you sing "Mack the Knife" just one more time.

I first met Steve several years ago while attending a Model A Ford Restorers Club National Meet in Grand Rapids, Michigan. By the end of the week long event I felt like I had known him for years.
During the intervening years I had many interactions with Steve. The topics of conversation were wide ranging, and always interesting.
As recent as late last week I was speaking with Steve about a problem he was having with his new truck....and the fact that he questioned whether or not it would take him where he needed to go, antique motorcycle and auto events, in the comming weeks. At the time it seemed like a significant obstacle. Looking back, and from a different perspective, the problem wasn't such a big deal.
There's no question....Steve and his sense of humor will be sorely missed!

Steve was a classmate at the Coast Guard Academy. We truly became friends when we became Marine Safety Specialist as junior officers. I met LT Ciccalone in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, in the early eighties where he was a marine inspector. He was huge, had this tremendous beard and deep voice; very intimidating. I was fortunate enough to be on the opposing softball team watching him crush the ball over the fence. Few years later, I was honored to join his team. After all these years, I met Steve again at the annual CG Marine Inspectors Christmas event this past December. He looked good and he seemed to be enjoying life…or at least the beer! May your ride in Heaven never beak down and the streets long and winding.

As our classmates have said, Steve was a great guy. He was chock full of personality and had a warm spark in his eyes that made you know you were welcome in his company.
Steve told us at our 20th Class Reunion that he had been diagnosed with melanoma and that his goal was to make it to the 25th. He was so brave about it. He surpassed that! We just had our 40th Reunion in 2010. We are fortunate to have had him among us for so many years after his diagnosis and still, he left us far too soon.
We love you, Steve!
