Theodore Wydler Obituary

Mystic - Theodore "Teddy" A. Wydler of Mystic, born Dec. 10, 1930, passed away peacefully the morning of Thursday, May 16, 2013, at his home. After a long battle with cancer, he is finally back with the love of his life, Grace.

Teddy truly was... one of a kind. To have known him was a gift itself. He touched so many people and made their lives fuller. He was a friend, a father, a teacher, the neighbor everyone wishes they had, and the kind of man every man can only strive to be.

If you were lucky enough to have known him then you probably have your own "Teddy stories" and if you did not know him, you most likely know someone who did. Be it stories of his childhood, Pensacola, Fla., the silica mines, his crazy brother Emil, wacky adventures with his family, trips to the casino, dirty jokes and poems about "little johnny" - they will pop into our memories from time to time and make us smile.

Teddy was an amazing stone mason. The many beautiful paths and walls that he built throughout the Mystic and Noank area will remain for years to come.

Teddy absolutely loved his family, and that love equally returned from his eight children, Susan Poulin of Westerly, Cheryl Shea of South Carolina, Donna "Cookie" Peterson (passed Nov. 26, 2010 after her own battle with cancer), Jay Jackson of Washington, Alan Jackson of Florida, Tracy Jackson of Stonington, Heidi Perrino of Florida, and Cindy Garbarino of Stonington; his nineteen grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

In his final days, he was at his home in Mystic surrounded by his family, friends and the wonderful care of Hospice. Scattered around, were photos, cards, flowers and gifts brought by the many people whose lives he touched. On the mantle was a stick figure valentine he drew for Grace in 1987 on a piece of slate, found on a job. On the table was a book - "Bogues Alley" pieced together containing his family history, images of his predeceased brothers and sisters - Emil, William, Eleanor Palardy, Beverly Steele, Grace and Doris Wydler; His father, Emil Wydler, and mother, Grace (Bogue) Wydler.

He was the handsome, blue eyed man working and whistling about Mystic with that mischievous gleam in his eye and a smile on his face. Happy and strong through the very end, Teddy was a real character...truly...one of a kind.

Please join the family from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, May 26, for a celebration of Ted's life, at the Knights Of Columbus Hall on Hatch Street in Mystic. Bring your stories and kind words to share with family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Center for Hospice Care Southeastern Connecticut, 227 Dunham St., Norwich, CT 06360.

The Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl St., historic downtown Mystic, is assisting the family.

Dad (Teddy) was the true meaning of "Father". I can't think of anyone I could be more proud of than my dad. He spent his life sheltering and feeding a menagerie of crazy kids and showed us that our troubles were just minor inconveniences and a good reason to laugh. I cant help but shed a tear when I realize I won't see him any more, but then I remember what life was like with him and I just start smiling and laughing.

My story starts with a beat up red pick up truck, a shetlon pony, a bunch of kids, and a drive thru mystic with Teddy at the wheel blowing the horn every 5 seconds. How we ever held on to that pony in the bed of that truck is beyond me. I'm sure we were on our way back from getting ice cream and I'm sure Teddy paid for it. Thanks Teddy. The best neighbor any kid could ever ask for. Rest in peace.

I truly believe that there is no one in the world like Teddy, and there never will be. He was crazy in all the best ways someone can be. Fun cannot begin to describe him. He made life on High Street the envy of our town...bringing us to Janeiros for ice cream in the bucket loader of his tractor, playing games with us all the time, and basically taking us in. Tea and toast at the Wydler's house will always be remembered! Give Grace a kiss for me!

Every time I drive by the house my parents built on Pequot Avenue in Mystic, I stop and look at the wall Teddy built; he was my mother's cousin. It gave them such pleasure. He was such a wonderful person and quite the character.

Years ago Teddy helped us clear the tangle of locust and bittersweet from the back acre at 15 Elm St. Neighbor-lady came out her back door screaming,"It looks like a bulldozer went through here!" She was by no means pleased. But at the moment, Ted went by, smiling and waving, on his, um... bulldozer. He was a wonderful man
