So many stories. My favorite will always be the time he told one of his daughters and I that he named sluice gates after us when changes and updates were being implemented years ago at the MDC facility in Hartford in the Brainard/Airport Road area. I remember thinking right, Tom, I don't think so. A number of years later I was out with my husband and he introduced me to someone he knew who worked at the MDC facility. I said "Oh, did you know Tom McHugh? He's my friend's dad." He said "Are you Elise or Jane?" I answered "Why?" He answered "Tom named sluice gates after the two of you, everyone knows about that!" That was Tom! I miss him still, loved him dearly and did not see him as much as I should have. His family has my sympathy and thoughts today.

I will always remember "Big Tom" warmly, with much love. He never failed to make me laugh. He had a wonderful wit and sense of humor. Many memories of times spent with him over the years with his family or boating. He was a great man with a wonderful heart. He will be missed.

Back in the 1960s, I was his newspaper boy. Since he lived beyond my route, I had a paperbox for him at the junction of Porter Road and Martin Road. Sometimes on his way home, he would find no newspaper waiting for him, as he would be a little early (or I would be a little late). I also remember his father with fondness, as he lived in Gilead, also, and treated the children here with kindness.

No longer will I hear Tom say, "Niantic calling" when he calls me. He had a great
sense of humor. Will miss you Tom.
