Thomas Swanson Obituary

Uncasville - Thomas "Tom" Richard Swanson, 72, of Uncasville entered eternal life on Jan. 16, 2019 surrounded by his loving family. He was born March 18, 1946 in New London, the son of the late Harold and Anna (Spinnato) Swanson. Mr. Swanson attended local schools and graduated from New London High School.

He enlisted in the US Marine Corps and served proudly in Vietnam, where he received two Purple Hearts. He was a true patriot, loved his country deeply, and was a proud Marine. He was united in marriage to the former Donna Schell on Sept. 8, 1973 at United Methodist Church in New London. He was employed at Electric Boat, retiring after 30 years. Mr. Swanson was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and a Life member of the Purple Heart Association. He was active in Montville youth sports, coaching soccer and Little League. He served as Chief Umpire for Little League District 10 for 15 years. Tom also volunteered at Montville High School with the wrestling team and school band. He was a fantastic cook, and enjoyed cooking for family and friends. He met with his brothers, Harold, Ronald and Floyd to make their homemade wine which they labeled "Quattro Fratelli " (Four Brothers) and homemade soupy.

Beside his beloved wife, Donna, he is survived by two children, Stacie Vargas and fiancé Fred Ritchie of Uncasville, Michael and wife Christian Swanson of Preston; two brothers, Harold and wife Dale Swanson of New London, Ronald and wife JoAnne Swanson of Waterford; his grandchildren, Angela and husband Graham Connolly, Katelyn Vargas, Connor and Corbin Swanson; great-grandson, John Connolly; his former wife Nicki Beaudry.

His family will receive relatives and friends from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday at the Impellitteri-Malia Funeral Home, 84 Montauk Ave. New London. Interment with full military honors will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory to Disabled American Veterans, PO Box 14301 Cincinnati, OH 45250-030

Donna, Mike and Family, I am so sorry to hear of Tom's passing. He was a trooper and wonderful person. Our times umpiring in Little League together are among my fondest memories, and I will never forget our trip to Williamsport! Tom was tough on the outside, but had a heart of gold. I will remember the good times and be thankful for time I had to spend with him.
