Thomas Veitch Obituary

East Lyme - Thomas Edward Veitch beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend passed away Aug. 16, 2021, at Yale New Haven Hospital. Thom was born Sept. 7,1950, in Pittsburgh, Pa. He was the son of the late Eugene Arthur and Mary Louise (Hetrick) Veitch. He spent most of his childhood in Pittsburgh (a lifelong Steelers fan) until his family moved to North Stonington, in 1963.

Upon graduating from Wheeler High School in North Stonington, in 1968, he joined the U.S. Air Force and served in Vietnam. During this time, he studied taekwondo and earned his second degree black belt.

After receiving his engineering degree, Thom received his MBA degree from the University of Connecticut and his BA degree in computer science from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Hartford.

Employed at General Dynamics for 38 years, he retired as a principal test engineer Sept 18, 2011, receiving recognition from the United States Navy for his role in the successful delivery of the first nine Virginia Class Submarines.

On Feb. 13, 1982, he married Karen (Wentworth) Veitch. They were together 45 years. They raised two strong, independent women, (Marianne and Casey) who were undoubtedly the pride and joy of his life. He was a dedicated "Girl Dad" enjoying his years coaching girls soccer as well as attending each and every music performance or sporting event for his girls no matter where it was held.

He is survived by his wife Karen; daughter Marianne Maresca and husband TJ; and grandsons, Jack and Bodhi all of Saunderstown, R.I.; daughter Casey Veitch and John Randolph of East Lyme; his "favorite" sister Mary Ann Veitch and Jen Walker of Rehoboth Beach, Del.; brothers, Ronald Veitch of Harrisburg, Pa., Timothy Veitch and wife Geri of Westerly, R.I.; and family Labrador, Alvin.

I was reminiscing about my early days at Electric Boat and searched online for some of my former co-workers. I was so sad to read about Thom's passing. I worked with Thom only one year in Electronic Test, from 1985 to 1986. He helped make the office environment light and fun. My own mom passed in 2018 after living with the Parkinsonian sydrome Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP) for several years. Please accept my deepest condolences. May you be comforted by your dearest memories.

Dear Karen and family, I was so saddened to read Thom has lost his courageous battle with Parkinson's. Many fond memories of his kindness and thoughtfulness when we were in school and in sports.
Sincerely, Susan

I´m so sorry to hear this. I worked with Thom for a short time at EB but him and Ed Javor made it fun. Thom and Ed used to have these end of the year superlatives they would give out to co workers. Loved talking to Thom about his wife and two daughters. So sorry for your loss. He will be missed!
