Virginia Effman Obituary

Stonington - Virginia Avery Effman, 78, of Stonington, passed away Saturday, Oct. 27, 2018 in her sleep while being treated at The Westerly Hospital.

She was born Dec. 24, 1939, in New London, the daughter of Rowland and Flora (Pierce) Avery of Old Mystic.

Mrs. Effman attended Stonington High School, and was a graduate of Eastern Connecticut Teacher's College. She applied her schooling in elementary education in the Town of Groton at both Northeast Academy and Mary Morrison Elementary School for over 46 years, retiring in 2016.

Virginia was known for her musical talents, playing both the accordion and piano throughout her life. During her teen years she toured in a band throughout southern New England, and also was recorded live on radio. She began formally playing as the organist at Old Mystic United Methodist Church at 15 years old in 1954, and continued this joy for the following 63 years.

She is survived by her husband of 56 years, August Gary Effman; and son, August Kip Effman, both of Stonington.

At Virginia's request, all services will be private for the family.

As a lifelong animal lover, any memorial contributions may be directed to: Stand Up for Animals, P.O. Box 1706, Westerly, RI 02891.

The Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl St., historic downtown Mystic is assisting the family.

Mrs. Effman was my fouth grade teacher in 2007. I went searching for her to personally thank her for the impact she has left on my life. I am now on my way to becoming a teacher myself at Towson University. She may not of remembered me but she helped make me who I am today. Virginia was a wonderful and amazing woman, may she rest in peace.

Uncle Gary and Kip,
Aunt Ginny was the best teacher at Northeast Elementary School. I used to watch her from across the hall and wished she was my teacher.
I am so very sorry for your loss. Please keep in touch.
Love,

Uncle Gary and Kip - I am so sorry to learn of Aunt Ginny's passing. Though we lost touch over the years, I remember her fondly. She was a sweet soul and is now at peace in heaven with God. Nothing will replace the void in your life but rest easy because she is with you always. I love you both.

Mrs. Effman was my third grade teacher at Northeast School in 1969. I can't begin to describe what a wonderful person and teacher she was. I will always treasure my fond memories of her. She was pivotal in encouraging a life long love of learning and reading.

Mrs Effman was my third grade teacher at the Original Northeast School on Flanders Road in 1965. The best school teacher I ever had ! A lovely woman who cared so much for all her students.
