He was born on Oct. 13, 1924 in Norwich to the late Albert and Claudia Fontaine Schofield.
Mr. Schofield served his country in the Merchant Marines during World War II. On Oct. 10, 1970, Walter married the former Judith Denison in Montville; Mrs. Schofield survives him.
He worked as the sexton at Second Congregational Church in New London after retiring from Sears. He and his family enjoyed camping in Connecticut and along the eastern coastline. Mr. Schofield was also active in scouting for many years and was the Scout Master for Pack 3 which met at the Second Congregational Church in New London. He was instrumental in establishing the annual Webelos Camperee.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by four great-grandchildren, 13 grandchildren, and eight children and their spouses, Carl Schofield, of Groton, William and Mary Turley, of Hebron, Wayne and Elizabeth Turley, of Quaker Hill, Kevin and Ada Turley, of Waterford, Keith and Merrielee Turley, of Montville, Brian and Susan Turley, of Mystic, Sheila and Chris Hames, of Tennessee, and Deborah Schofield and her husband, Chris Pastuszak, of Massachusetts. He is also survived by his sister, Edith Aubin, of Jewett City.
His sister, Ruth Poreda, predeceased him.
His family will receive visitors on Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2005 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Impellitteri-Malia Funeral Home, 84 Montauk Avenue in New London. The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2005 at 9:30 a.m. in Harkness Chapel on the Connecticut College grounds in New London. Interment will be at the Elm Grove Cemetery in Mystic.
