Wayne attended Saint Bernard's and graduated from New London High School in 1962. Wayne worked for Sears, Roebuck & Co., retiring after over 20 years. For the last four decades he was a Connecticut State Marshall.

Wayne was proud to be a New London guy! He started out as a volunteer fireman and served as foreman of the F.L. Allen Hook and Ladder Company for 10 years. During the Vietnam era, he joined the Connecticut National Guard and remained as a reservist throughout the 70s. In his late 20s, Wayne was elected to the NL Board of Education, where he served with distinction for 10 years. Following his Board of Education tenure, Wayne became a NL City councilor, serving as both deputy mayor and mayor.

Wayne has given countless hours to his church and community by proudly lending his expertise to the following boards: Catholic Charities, The American Cancer Society, The Hospice Fundraising Board, RSVP board of directors, Make a Wish Foundation, and New London Police Community Relations, many of which were shared as chairman. In 2008, he was named Men of Distinction.

As a member of the New London Lodge of Elks, he has chaired a myriad of events- most notable the Annual Italian Night. He has co-chaired the New London Hope week Memorial Day parade and the Veteran's Day Vigil. This annual event was held in honor of his late parents Ellen and Michael Vendetto.

Wayne continued to be extremely active in the Democratic Party and remained a trusted confidant and advisor to his fellow party members.

With all the titles Wayne has held, it is "Poppy" the name fondly used by his two children, his five grandchildren, and many close family friends, that he cherished and was most proud of.

Wayne was a very special person. I met him in high school as our surnames were at the end of the alphabet and our homerooms were in the same hallway. He was always smiling!

Throughout the years I would see him around town or at Sears.
Then our paths began to cross more regularly when I was working at the courthouse.

He was a very friendly, warm, kind and special person.

I worked with Wayne at Sears in a different department and he was a great mentor and friend. After he retired, we'd run into each other and it was like no time had elapsed. A truly amazing man with so much generosity. He will be greatly missed.

Love to his family,

Deb

Mr.V. was simply the BEST ! He always greeted my with a hug and kiss. Growing up he was the neighborhood father. He would load all us neighborhood kids into his cadi and us to the duck pond to go ice skating. He also let us have shows for the kids in his basement. Mr. V will be so very missed by one and all. I hope all the stories and memories bring his family comfort.

To the Vendetto family,
Please accept my sincere condolences on the loss of your dear Wayne, such a wonderful man. I first met him when I worked at Sears as a teenager in the catalog department at the old Sears in the shopping center. When I graduated from NLHS (Class of 1974), Wayne made sure he was the one who handed me my diploma on graduation day; I remember feeling so special that he did that. Years later when I would come home to New London to visit, I would be sure to stop in to Sears to say hi to Wayne, because I knew he would be there at the bottom of the escalator with a big smile, a twinkle in his eye, and a warm "Hi Lyd!"

May Wayne rest well, and your memories give you comfort.

Sorry to hear About your Brother

Dear Donna and the entire circle of Wayne's family n' friends,

I was born and raised in Buffalo, but when drafted for Viet Nam, I joined the Submarine Navy, which soon enough (1974) landed me in my new home, New London. And, since then, among the many influences I can gladly recount, the Vendetto family has been a fun and pretty indelible one. More so with Mickey and Donna through numerous mutual affiliations, than Wayne, but Wayne was always a familiar and friendly acquaintance as well, and will be missed.

Having lost both my parents and understanding the hole left behind, regardless the inevitability or forewarning, pray this helps some wee bit...to allow...enable...the grief! And the grief will come, the pain unfortunate, but as necessary; embrace it and let it work its magic, while remembering the depth of it is a yardstick of not only the impact of your loss, but the breadth of the love it represents. So truly sorry to hear about Wayne. At least now he's at peace with our Lord definitely keepin' y'all in my prayers!

When my mother died, even after a years-long battle with cancer, I was shattered by the loss...inconsolable...she was my mentor! I like to think that I got my character from my father, but my mind and its capacity from m'dear sainted mother!!! BUT, "If your faith assures you she's in heaven, then what are the tears all about?!?" I hold eternity dearly close...a cherished, hard-won prize...but, in the interim, that answer lies below.

SELFISH TEARS
(I Eulogize My Beloved Mother - March, 1989)

Today we cry...must admit they're selfish tears.
You see...our faith assures your journey's done.
But it's not for you we mourn, at all, my dear;
It's for those of us you've left behind...alone!!!

We share your joy...share your happiness at rest,
Your painful fears now for forever stilled.
You've fought the good fight, passed the final test,
But you've left behind a hole that can't be filled!!!

So, until we each rejoin you some someday,
And, while your memory buoys us through those years,
We'll miss you...but continue on our way,
And, from time to time, we'll cry our selfish tears!!!
