William Moffett Obituary

Pawcatuck - William W. Moffett, 75, of Pawcatuck, died March 9, 2025, in his home, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Stockton, Calif., in 1949, to Joan and Bill Moffett. He grew up in Bronxville, N.Y. and Glen Ridge, N.J.

He graduated from Glen Ridge High School where he won the New Jersey State Championship in high hurdles in 1967. He graduated from Northeastern University with a B.A. in 1972.

He travelled for a year before settling in Mystic, where his family had a summer home. He worked as a carpenter and ultimately founded his own business, Moffett Builders. He later became an agent with Russ Realtors.

A Deacon at Union Baptist Church, he was an active participant in the Sunday Morning Forum. He was a long-time volunteer at the Arts Cafe Mystic. He was an excellent dancer.

He is survived by his son Christopher Moffett who is currently an officer in the United States Army; his sisters, Catharine Moffett and Susan Moffett; 7 nieces and nephews; and three grandnieces. As children, they adored their Uncle Bill who would take them tubing off the Allyns Alley dock, skiing in Vermont, or sitting in a hot tub in his house in the woods. He was a devoted brother to Susan whom he would visit every Sunday at Academy Point.

A service will be held for him at Union Baptist Church in June.

Willy and I met approx 49 or so years ago well he was working with my husband, Janis Vancans. They were rebuilding a home in Ashaway, RI for dear friends of mine. We became good friends. Willy was a handsome, funny and loving young man with a long braid of dark hair. We worked and played together, sometimes ending our work day at the old Harbor View Bar. We both eventually became friends of Bill W. He left me the sweetest voicemail after my Janis died last October. I just wish we could have had a lunch together one more time as he requested . In love and light Will . May we all meet again in our heavenly journey. All my love, Lauren

Sorry sad to learn of Bill´s passing. We knew as a summer friend. He worked on and took care of our cottage on Willow Point . I believe my dad George gave him one of his first construction jobs many years ago. We will miss his stopping by to check on us in the summer on Willow Point

I meet Bill through friends and enjoyed his company. He made me my first meal of pesto and pasta. Hearing of his passing, I made myself a plate in his memory. I know he will be greatly missed.

Bill was such a kind soul, always a pleasure to be in his company. He made me feel like I was the only one in the room when I was with him. I have great memories of being in his company.

I´m going to miss him. He would come in to Pier Cleaners with one shirt with stains and ALWAYS needed a button.

Billy will be sadly missed. Our families go back a long way. He was an anchor of the MI community and as we loose this generation of guards we reflect on times before.

Bill was a great friend to me. He and Randy helped sell my house after Kurt died. He was always willing to give me a hand when I needed a 'handyman'! R.I.P. BILL XOXO

I worked with "Billy" at Harbor View restaurant in Stonington. He was 10 years older than me, but he introduced us young bus girls and bus boys to late night dancing at the Knickerbocker after a busy night at the restaurant (and he could dance). RIP Billy

Bill was a supporter of the arts and loved to eat, drink and be merry. Passionate about life in every way. Always ready to learn something new. He built the house I lived in for a few years. He will be missed. I love how this picture captures his character. I believe I took it in the fall of 1997

Bill was a beloved member of our Quambaug firehouse daily meetings. He found peace and honesty and support there and he gave back in so many ways. He will be missed

Bill was my neighbor for the last fourteen years. He was very helpful when you needed his help. I recall he loved swimming in the Mystic River when he got the chance.
