Cargill MacMillan Obituary

Cargill MacMillan, Jr.

Cargill (Mac) MacMillan, Jr., age 84, passed away peacefully on November 14, 2011 from complications of Parkinson's disease, at his home in Indian Wells, California. Mac was the great-grandson of W.W. Cargill, the founder of Cargill, Inc., a privately held international producer and marketer of food, agricultural, financial, and industrial products and services. He was the son of Cargill MacMillan, past president of Cargill, and Pauline Whitney MacMillan. Born in Minneapolis, Mac grew up in Wayzata, Minnesota and attended the Blake School in Minneapolis. After high school he enlisted and served in the United States Air Force. He attended Yale University, graduating in 1950 with a Bachelor's degree in Economics. His career with Cargill, Inc. spanned 38 years. Mac began as a trainee in 1950, held positions in Buffalo, New York City, Chicago and Minneapolis. He is credited with the vision, design, and construction of the Cargill Office Center in Minnetonka, which is a home to over 1,850 employees. He served on the Cargill Board of Directors from 1963 to 1996 and chaired the Finance Committee. Throughout his life, Mac offered his time and talents to many organizations, serving on the boards of Abbott-Northwestern Hospital, Minneapolis Society of Fine Arts, Twin Cities Public Television, Minneapolis Institute of Arts, Macalester College, Greater Minneapolis Chamber of Commerce, United Way of the Minneapolis Area, the Johnson Institute, Northwestern National Bank of Minneapolis, Community First Bank, Minnesota Outward Bound School, and the YMCA. An avid outdoorsman, Mac loved fishing and hunting. He was also an athlete who enjoyed playing tennis and golf. Mac and his wife, Donna, shared a passion for travel and art, and together circled the globe acquiring art for their world renowned collection. Much of their collection has been donated to museums across the country. Mac is survived by his wife, Donna, and their six children, 24 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. He is survived by his brother, Whitney; sister, Pauline; and former wife, Marnie. His sister, Alice, preceded him in death. It was my honor and privilege to have known Cargill "Mac" MacMillan, Jr.

During the past twenty years from our first meeting through the Palm Springs Desert Museum up until today, I have enjoyed working and socializing with Donna and Mac immensely.

Mac's keen eye and commitment to the arts has enriched the Coachella Valley in ways that are hard to measure. One half of a great philanthropic team is gone and he will be greatly missed. My deepest sympathies to Donnna and rest of the family.
