Charles Bergschneider Obituary

Dr. Charles M. Bergschneider

Charles M. Bergschneider of Rancho Mirage, Calif. passed away on November 13, 2015. He was the spouse of Richard John Althoff, who survives him. Chuck was born in Chicago, Ill. in 1935. He received his B.S. Degree from Marquette University and received his Medical Doctor Degree in 1961 from Marquette Medical School. Chuck served as Chief of Staff and Chief of Medicine at Pioneer Hospital in Artesia, Calif. Chuck and John moved to Palm Springs, Calif. Subsequently they moved to The Springs Country Club in Rancho Mirage, where Chuck served on the Homeowner's board as well as its president. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Aids Assistance Program in Palm Springs. Chuck maintained a life-long interest in history, politics, and art. In addition, he and John enjoyed travel in many areas of Europe. Chuck and John were excellent hosts and always enjoyed having their family and friends around them. Chuck will be remembered for his wit, his well-reasoned but strong opinions, his gentleness and kindness to all who knew him, and for his thoughtfulness regarding the less fortunate. The family thanks Dr. David Ko and the entire staff of the Eisenhower Medical Center ICU for their expert professional, sensitive, and kindly care of Chuck in his last days. Survivors include Chuck's spouse of 43 years, Richard John Althoff; sons, Charles M. Bergschneider Jr. of Scottsdale, Ariz. and William C. Bergschneider and his wife, Carla Polkinhorn of Pasadena, Calif; two sisters, Caroline Ferber and her husband, Wayne, of Simi Valley, Calif., and Elizabeth Bergschneider of Camarillo, Calif. The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be sent to either the FIND Food Bank or to Martha's Village Kitchen or to the USO.
