David Broderick Obituary

David Edward Broderick

April 21, 1942 - June 23, 2016

David Edward Broderick, "Dave," a cherished husband, loving father, and brother, departed this world to be with the lord on Thursday, June 23, 2016. He was surrounded by his family near his home in Rancho Mirage, California. Dave was born in Norwood, Massachusetts, on April 21, 1942 to Michael F. Broderick and Margaret Doyle. He was a graduate of Oregon High School where he was an outstanding 4-sport athlete and received an athletic scholarship to Northern Illinois University, where he distinguished himself in his football career and his fraternity Tau Kappa Epsilon. He was a member of the 1963 National Championship football team (where he scored the winning touchdown) and was later inducted into the NIU Hall of Fame. He was subsequently drafted by the N.Y. Jets of the National Football League where he competed for one year. He and his close friend Jerry Andres continue to give back to outstanding student athletes at NIU through their Broderick-Andres scholarship fund. In the early 1970s Dave packed and moved to California to launch his career in Real Estate Development. He went on to found several successful companies and lead as a corporate executive at Marriott and Starwood, two Fortune 500 companies. One of his greatest achievements was his mentorship of the people he worked with throughout his career. He will be remembered as an accomplished business man who inspired all who met him and worked with him. He had a strong love and commitment to his wife, family, friends, and world-wide business associates. He also had a great love of his children. Dave enjoyed traveling extensively with his wife, Dottie and their family. He had a great passion for the outdoors and enjoyed hunting and fishing with his great friends. He also sponsored and coached many underprivileged athletes in Southern California, giving them the opportunity to attend college.

He will be forever missed by his wife, Dottie; daughter, Erin Elizabeth (Mark) Broderick-Kania; son, Ryan Michael (Meredith) Broderick; brothers: Mickey (Liz) Broderick and Dennis Broderick; sister, Ellen (David) Hoffman; sister-in-law, Jan Broderick; and many nieces and nephews. Dave was predeceased by his brothers, Jake Broderick and James Broderick and parents, Michael and Margaret Broderick.

Even though Dave's wonderful life took him all over the world, those who knew him well understood that he was always truly at home when he was with his family and close friends on the Rock River.

Christian funeral mass will be held Friday July 1, 2016 at 10:00 AM in St. Mary Catholic Church, Oregon. Interment in St. Mary Cemetery, Oregon.

The Celebration of Life will be held at a later date in the Coachella Valley.

Dottie and family. We are so sorry to learn of your loss. We didn't know him well, but we remember him well. He was such a wonderful host when we all went to your house on Clancy Lane after golf one summer night.

I waited on Dave every morning at the Starbucks at Monterey and Country Club. He was always a pleasure, and brightened each day. I was so sorry to read about his passing, and will miss seeing his smiling face each day. My deepest sympathies to his family.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the Broderick family. I was lucky to be a fraternity brother and football teammate of Davids at NIU. David was a special person and leader.

There is just so much to say about D.E.B. A very smart man, true leader and great guy. I can still hear him saying, "How's it going, kiddo?"! He always inquired about my husband's hunting and fishing adventures, which so paled in comparison to his own. And we all witnessed his love for his family. To Dottie, Ryan and Erin, our deepest sympathies. He is missed, never to be forgotten, and just a thought away. May God continue to richly bless you all.
