Indio - LOVING MEMORY of Fernando Fregoso

10/2/67-6/11/20

Fernando Fregoso, 52, of Indio, California, passed away on Thursday, June 11, 2020, at the hospital due to COVID-19.

Fernando was born on October 2, 1967, in Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico. Fernando's family migrated to Coachella, California, when he was ten months old. He attended the Coachella Valley public schools: Westside, John Kelly, and Coachella Valley High School. During high school, he played four years of football, two years of baseball, and two years of soccer. He graduated from high school in 1985.

After high school, Fernando played in the Coachella Soccer League and then moved on to serve as a coach for his father's adult men soccer team from 1985-1987. He then helped coordinate and coach an indoor travel soccer team in Ontario, CA, from 1987-1989. He was the head coach for the girls' soccer team at his alma mater, Coachella Valley High School, from 1994-1997(3 yrs.) and at Indio High School from 1998-2011 (14 years). Also during that time, in his evenings and on his Saturday mornings, he coached for 22 years for the AYSO (American Youth Soccer Organization ages 4-19) for the city of La Quinta (2 yrs) and Indio (20 yrs.) In the last year before his passing, Fernando was the head coach of his 12-year-old daughter's traveling soccer team, Desert Inferno, where tournaments became a monthly event. This team was formed using athletes he had recruited from Indio's and La Quinta's AYSO. As a coach, Fernando, ingrained in his players the importance of excelling in school. He made it customary to recognize his athletes for their academic accomplishments by proudly acknowledging them after practices/games. As a coach, Fernando was a father figure to his players, but most importantly, he was a caring human being who saw the potential in all his players.

Fernando was employed by the Coachella Valley Mosquito and Vector Control for 23 years. There he became a Vector Control Technician 1. He truly enjoyed his job, and his co-workers became like an extended family to him. While completing his job calls in his assigned areas of work, he passionately educated the public about the dangers of mosquito breeding and treated ant infestations. The greatest reward from his job was when a customer, whom he had given service to, would call the district to give him praise for his work.

Fernando gave his time and heart to serve the community, but he was also quite invested in his children's education and athletics. He made it a priority to attend his children's sports and school events. He coached all his children in football, baseball, and soccer. One year, he coached football alongside his older son, Fernando, at Indio High School to support his younger son, Eleazar. Fernando's future dream was to coach the girls' high school soccer team side by side, his older son, Fernando. Family was of the utmost importance to Fernando, and he made it vital to express his love to each of his children.

In March 1986, Fernando met the love of his life, Yesenia, whom he later married on May 8, 1999. Together, they were blessed to have two sons and two daughters of their own: Fernando, Sarah, Eleazar, and Xitlalli. Fernando is also a father to Kimberly Fregoso from a previous relationship.

Fernando is survived by his mother Teresa Sanchez de Fregoso, his brother, Luis Miguel Fregoso, and his four sisters Emma Fernandez, Socorro Garcia, Cecilia Fregoso, Maria Eugenia Fregoso, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Fernando is preceded in death by his father Luis Fregoso and his brother Juan Fregoso.
