Harold Holland Obituary

Harold Holland

Harold Holland, 85, of Rancho Mirage, Calif. passed away March 27, 2015. He was born on November 4, 1929 in Scranton, Pa. to Emanuel and Beatrice (Aug) Holland. He moved to New York City, N.Y. in 1943 and then relocated to Rhode Island in 1949 where he married Helene Jewett on December 7, 1952. There he started and grew his business; had three children; and lived there until he moved to Indian Wells, Calif. and then Rancho Mirage. He served in the US Navy from 1951 to 1954 and was in the Korean War aboard the USS Stephen Potter. Besides his wife Helene and children, Harold had four primary loves: his business, golf, traveling and cruising. As a golf enthusiast, he belonged to, actively played, and actively participated at several clubs over the years. He was a member of Valley Country Club in West Warwick, R.I.; Quidnesset Country Club in North Kingstown, R.I., where he served on and chaired many committees, and served on the Board of Directors; Ledgemont Country Club in Rehoboth, Mass.; Bermuda Dunes Country Club in Bermuda Dunes, Calif., where he served on many committees; and Morningside Country Club in Rancho Mirage where he served on and chaired many committees, and served on the Board of Directors. He played in The Bob Hope Chrysler Classic for 15 years, had six holes-in-one in his career, had the wonderful distinction (along with Arnold Palmer) of scoring two holes-in-one on the same hole in consecutive rounds at Ledgemont Country Club in 1994. He volunteered at Eisenhower Medical Center, served on several fund-raising committees and served on EMC Foundation Board of Governors. Once home from the Korean War, he and his brother Julian founded Art-Mold Products Company in Cranston, R.I. Art-Mold was a specialty advertising manufacturing company. The company grew successfully before it was acquired by a NYSE conglomerate. He was one of four partners (owners) of Measured Marketing Services Inc. based in Los Angeles, Calif. MMS was a specialty advertising manufacturing, direct mail, distribution and creative marketing company where he also served on the Board of Directors. He helped expand MMS internationally, opening and growing Measured Marketing Services International in Grasse, France, where he served on the Board of Directors. Harold also served on the Board of Directors for Norwood Promotional Products Company of San Antonio, TX and Specialty Advertising Association International. Counselor Magazine named him one of the 50 most influential people of the Advertising Specialty Industry. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Helene (Jewett) Holland; sons, Evan (Neesa) Holland of Warwick, R.I., and Gary (Autumn) Holland of Fort Worth, TX.; daughter, Judi Holland of Pasadena, Calif.; grandson, Aaron Holland; and granddaughter Rachel Holland. He was preceded in death by his parents, Emanuel and Beatrice Holland; brother and his wife, Julian and Simone Holland; sister and her husband, Wilma and Edward Safire; and his niece, Marilyn Holland. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, March 31, 2015 at 10:00 am at Temple Isaiah, 322 W. Alejo Road, Palm Springs, CA 92262, followed by graveside service at Desert Memorial Park, 31705 DaVall Drive, Cathedral City, CA 92234. A Celebration of Harold's Life will be held at Morningside Country Club, 39033 Morningside Drive, Rancho Mirage, CA 92270 immediately after the graveside service. Shiva will be held at Harold and Helene's home on the same evening from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm, 45 Park Lane, Rancho Mirage, CA 92270. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to Eisenhower Medical Center or to any charity of choice.

Dear Helene, Evan, Gary & Judy
My deepest sympathies on the lost of your beloved husband and father. I remember the Holland family with only the warmest of memories. I had the pleasure of living across the street from both of Holland brothers and their wives and children. My own dad, Harvey, passed in 2006 and my mother Anne passed last year. While moving her things to my house, I came across the lovely piece Helene painted for my mother some 45+ years ago. It will now adorn a special place in my home.
I know Harold passed a number of years ago, I´m sending love and prayers to you all from an old friend and neighbor.

I caddied for Mr. Holland for a number of years in the 1970s, at Quidnessett. He was a gentleman's gentleman -- always treated us kids with respect and encouragement. You felt like anything was possible around Mr. Holland -- his enthusiasm and energy were infectious. I was thinking of him this evening and just saw this notice -- very sorry to the family and friends.

To the Holland Family,
I was deeply saddened to hear from Gary of Harold's passing. I have countless memories of Harold and the whole family that are very special. Growing up with Gary as my best friend, he was very much "Mr. Holland" to me, but my relationship with him evolved in a great way over the years. Some particularly fond memories: his 50th birthday party at Quid (I had already eaten dinner at home, but Mr. H said "have a steak", so of course I had a steak), rounds of golf with Harold and Gary at Morningside (he was a fabulous host, and it was special to share this mutual passion with him as an adult), and a wonderful time with him at Gary's wedding (a most special memory since he was still in great form). I will always remember Harold as: a great businessman, and I hope some of that wisdom trickled down to me mostly through Gary; one of the true golf enthusiasts, to which I can relate; and a fellow Pats fans. He came to be more than "Gary's dad" but also a friend to me. To Helene, Evan, Gary, and Judi, my deepest sympathy for your loss, and thanks to you and Harold for adding so greatly to my life.

My deepest condolences to Helene and the entire Holland family. I'm a former employee of Art-Mold products during mid 60's to mid 70's. My relationship with Harold and Julian set the stage for my own success in business in subsequent years. I remember all of you fondly.
