I. Davis Obituary

A. I. "Chip" Davis

1920 - 2013

Chip Davis, another member of the Greatest Generation left us on Wednesday, February 27, 2013. Chip Davis was born in Havre de Grace, Md., the son of Lillian and Percy Davis. As a result of his scholastic achievements he skipped three years of public school and graduated from the University of Maryland at age eighteen. At that time, Chip was one of the youngest candidates to receive his CPA. Although he was given a military deferment Chip volunteered for the U. S. Navy where he saw action in the South Pacific. He served with the Sea Bees (Construction Battalion) and concluded his active duty on Tinian constructing the base that was home to the Enola Gay. Shortly after his return to the States he married a beautiful young woman, Margaret McWilliams, and their marriage lasted sixty-seven years until his death. Margaret and Chip made Pittsburgh their home where Chip spent his career in the steel industry with Allegheny Ludlum, United States Steel and Fort Duquesne Steel where he helped found Prior Coated Metals. He concluded his career in the engraving and lithographing business at Bankers Lithographing. Chip and Margaret raised two children, Karyll (married to Jack Russell) and Brian. Both Margaret and Chip were avid golfers belonging to Edgewood Country Club and Longue Vue Country Club in Pittsburgh and in the early 1970's they bought a vacation home in Bermuda Dunes, Calif. When Chip retired Bermuda Dunes became their permanent home although they remained loyal to their beloved Pittsburgh Steelers and Pirates. The Davis family lived a full life and their children enjoy telling stories from their childhood. Margaret and Chip have one grandchild, Karyll, named after her aunt. Chip will be greatly missed by his family and many friends. A small family memorial service in keeping with Chip's wishes was held. For those wishing to do so, donations can be made to St. Margaret's Episcopal Church in Palm Desert and Eisenhower Medical Center.
