Jack Cameron Reynolds of Palm Springs, passed away peacefully at the age of 83 on Sunday, April 29th in San Diego after falling ill at the conclusion of a Hawaiian cruise, one of many wonderful journeys he and his partner Jacques Caussin have taken during their years together. Jack was born in North Platte, Nebraska to a prominent Nebraska cattle ranching family. His paternal grandfather was a state senator. His parents Reede and Beulah West Reynolds bought an 8,000 acre ranch which became RR Ranch (Reynolds Ranch) and was widely known in the region for Hereford and Black Angus cattle. He was expected to become a cattle rancher like four generations of his family. Instead Jack Reynolds, one of Palm Springs' notable bon vivants, became a citizen of the world and created a life of gratifying professional and artistic pursuits. Jack graduated from North Platte High School, where he actively performed in glee club and had the lead part in numerous plays. He also became associate editor of the high school year book, a talent that would serve him later in his life. He was offered a full drama scholarship to the University of Nebraska where his father and grandfather graduated. He also took some art training at the Chicago Art Institute. After college, he trained in the insurance business. In 1950, Jack joined the Navy and was stationed in San Diego where he would live for many years and raise a family with his then wife, Hallie, and three children. He worked in the newspaper and magazine publishing business and won many local and national awards, including four prestigious Copley Awards for innovative advertising campaigns while working at the San Diego Union Tribune. Jack started Oceans Magazine in January 1969 which became an important voice for oceanographic and environmental conservation. It was published for 16 years. Following his publishing career, Jack worked in academia serving as Director of Public Affairs for the United States International University and later as Dean of Students for California Western School of Law. Jack remained in San Diego following his divorce and enjoyed his retirement. He moved to Palm Springs in 2002 where he has lived happily painting his large colourful canvases and travelling the world with Jacques. Jack is survived by his partner Jacques Caussin, his younger brother Scott Reynolds ll, his three children Ann, Reede and Susan and five grandchildren, Eddie, Tom, Harry, Kendall and Delaney. According to his wishes, there will be no formal memorial celebration of life.
