James Carneal Obituary
Indian Wells - Long-time Date Festival manager, James Luther Carneal, died at his Indian Wells home on May 18, 2018. His wife of nearly 70 years, Verna, was at his side. Jim was born to James Luther and Celete Kidd Carneal in Roy, New Mexico on February 12, 1926.
After graduating high-school at 16 and enlisting in the Navy at 17, Jim graduated from Officer Training School at UCBerkeley, with a concurrent degree in agricultural economics. Jim then accepted a job in Twin Falls, Idaho, where he met and married Idaho native, Verna Morgan in 1948. Their marriage was later sealed in the San Diego LDS Temple. During the Korean Conflict Jim was recalled to serve aboard the heavy cruiser USS Bremerton.
The couple moved to California where Jim had a long career in agriculture management in the Central Valley and in Blythe. Jim served on the National Date Festival Board, and later he and Verna moved to the Coachella Valley, where Jim took over as manager of the Festival for many successful years.
Jim and Verna are the parents of three children (Teresa Sanofsky; Bruce and Jeff Carneal), grandparents of two (Erika Loveland and Jack Sanofsky), and great-grandparents of five.
The family wishes to thank his caregivers, especially devoted aide Kari Badillo.
