Larry Lichliter Obituary

Larry Lichliter, 68, passed away Friday, February 18, 2011 in Rancho Mirage, California after an extended illness. Larry was born in Cortez, Colorado in 1943, the son of the late William and Virginia Lichliter. He grew up in Grand Junction, Colorado and served as a Corporal in the U.S. Marine Corps prior to attending both Mesa State College and the University of Denver, where he graduated with an accounting degree in 1969. Larry started his career in finance with Samsonite, at the corporate headquarters in Denver, Colorado. He moved to Vail in 1973 to take a position as Controller for Cunningham Construction, a local developer. In 1976, Larry joined Vail Associates, where he served as Director of Finance for the start-up Beaver Creek Resort. In 1984 he was promoted to Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for Mountain Operations of Vail Associates. Larry oversaw resort development, the build out of the now famous Beaver Creek Resort and the expansion of Vail Mountain to the largest ski resort in North America. In 1992 Larry, with co-founding partner, Mike Shannon, then president of Vail Associates, created KSL Recreation, a leading real estate and resort company. Larry served as President of KSL Land Company, which was instrumental in successfully purchasing and expanding the famed La Quinta Resort & Club, PGA West and other iconic properties in the company portfolio. He was also a founding Advisory Board Director of KSL Capital Partners based in Denver, Colorado. Larry has been involved with numerous civic endeavors, from Colorado to California. He was a director of Vail Valley Medical Center, a director of Colorado Ski Country USA, and since retirement, a director of the Bob Hope Classic, benefiting over 40 non-profit groups throughout the Coachella Valley. He is survived and loved by Martha T. Brown; his son and daughter-in-law, Wade and Shannon Lichliter; granddaughter, Kristina Forrester; great granddaughters, Abby and Chloe, all of California. He is survived by his former wife, and Wade's mother, Sandra of Colorado; his sister, Glenda Sinclair; and his nieces, Tana Coates and Garin Murphy-Sinclair of California; as well as his adored pets, Jasper, Pijamita Barksdale I, Lolo and Missy. He was an avid outdoorsman, expert fly fisherman, and always enjoyed an occasional game of golf with good friends, of which he had many. He was a man that if you were fortunate enough to have had a relationship with him; he always left you in a better place than where you were. A memorial service will be held March 5, 2011 at 2:00 PM at La Quinta Resort & Club in La Quinta, California. The family is requesting that in lieu of flowers, charitable gifts and tributes to Larry, whose remarkable life has changed so many be made to Desert Classic Charities, PO Box 865, Rancho Mirage, CA 92270. www.bhcc.com/charity.html

Larry and I were in the Marine Corps together and worked in the same supply unit. Larry worked on one of these mysterious keypunch machines and card with holes in them. Very early days of "data processing" (1963ish).We were both guys who knew we had to finish our enlistment, get out and go to college--fast. We had a lot of laughs together.

As another testimonial noted, Larry was certainly more than the "L" of KSL. To say the least, he was a great mentor and leader for those of us on the Development team at KSL (La Quinta). Larry's legacy was second to none when it came to friends and certainly he was the "boss" but more important a genuine friend. In many ways, he was not replaceable. However, when he left us, and a problem or challenge would arise for development we would simply ask, "what would Larry do"; problem solved. Even today, it is difficult to comment for Emily and I, however, we really miss you Mr. L and thank you for all you did for the team.

I will always cherish our time together ... from those days in the 1970s in Colorado, to La Quinta nearly thirty years later. My friend, it is, and always will remain an honor for me to have been associated with you and call you a friend. Peace and shalom.

I met and played golf a few times during 2010. I have never met someone that could make you feel so good about having a relationship with him. I was so looking forward to more golf with him in Sandpoint. I feel so honored to have enjoyed a wonder lunch with him at the Beer Hunter in November. He brought his total wonderful self to that lunch with no hint of his near future.

I am so blessed to have worked with Larry at KSL for 8 years. Larry was one of the kindest, intelligent and driven executives I have ever experienced. I feel honored to have known him.

May you rest in peace Larry. My life is more enriched because I knew you.

Wade, Shannon, Martha, Glenda, etal...one of the most memorable days of my life was spending cousin Larry's birthday with him last year fishing on the Coquille River here in Oregon.

Wade, like I said in my letter, Larry represented the best of the Lichliter in all of us. He was an iconic figure, not just in the world of skiing and resorts, but also within his own family. He affected many people in many ways, and most of them positive. In the landscape that is the history of our family, Larry was a snow-capped mountain encompassing heights that most of us will never climb. Even so, the mountain is beautiful and it has given and will continue to give something to all of us who remain. The mountain creates streams, and lakes, and valleys that contain fish, and game, and crops. I am proud to simply have fished from one of those streams. We love him and we will miss him.
