Michael Schuler Obituary

Michael Richard Schuler

Michael Richard Schuler, 58, died February 7, 2012 of a heart attack in his home in Palm Desert, California. He was born April 23, 1953 in Elmhurst, Illinois. His family moved to the Coachella Valley in the early 1960's and while Michael traveled throughout the country for both business and fun, the desert was his home since that move. Michael married Cheryl Avriette, his childhood sweetheart and down-the-street neighbor, on September 25, 1976. They remained happily married until the day he died. Michael took ownership of his father-in-law's, Gene Avriette, painting contracting business, M.C.M. Painting Inc, in the early 80's. Hard-working and passionate, Michael was also an enthusiastic designer and builder of horse and hiking trails, including the Hopalong Cassidy Trail, the Art Smith Trail, and segments of the Pacific Crest Trail. He will forever be memorialized in one of the most traveled trails in the desert, the Mike Schuler Trail. Michael was a member of the Desert Riders, Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, and Arrowhead Fish and Game Club. He is survived by his wife Cheryl Schuler and their three children: Garrett Schuler, Katherine Schuler, and Annie Schuler. Michael is survived by both parents, Mary Lou Schuler who lives in San Diego and Al Schlemmel who now resides in Dixon, IL. His five siblings, Jim Schuler, Diane Wold, Debbie Schuler, Dawn Schuler, and Richard Schuler, also survive him and reside in San Diego, Calif. Memorial services will be held on Sunday, February 12, 2012 at 10:00 AM at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Cathedral City. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Desert Riders Trail Fund, Inc., P.O. Box 3813, Palm Desert, CA 92261.

Dear Cheryl, Garrett, Katherine and Annie,

I am very saddened by the sudden loss of your husband and father. I think of each one of you daily since receiving the news and send my sincerest love and sympathy. Cheryl, I'll never forget how during our European trips with the kids, you would be so excited when you were able to talk to Mike for a few minutes over the phone. You were absolutely "teenagery" at the sound of his voice over the crackling line! It was a pleasure to witness the true affection you had for each other, and the family love you all share.

As personal friends, pilots and Desert Riders we shall miss Mike, a man you could depend on, who was never too busy to discuss just one more project and time limits to boot. Mike, watch over our trails and over our safe rides and hikes...Wherever you are, you will always be with us as the Honorary Desert Rider you are.
We will attend Mike's services by riding one of his Desert Trails on Sunday.

Mike & Cheryl have been my neighbors for 14 years and they are the best neighbors you could ever want to have. I am so blessed to have had him in my life and I will never forget him. It was wonderful being able to ask Mike to come over and do my painting projects and know he was so honest. I also knew the job would be done right. Mike & I chatted about once a week as we were coming and going in our daily lives, and he proudly kept me posted on all the things going on with the kids and Cheryl. Just having him across the street and seeing his truck coming and going every day was a comfort to me and I miss him terribly. Bless you Mike in your final journey and I know you are in heaven now smiling down on us.
