Richard Bullock Obituary

Dr. Richard Bullock

Yucca Valley - Dr. Richard Bullock, 69, of Yucca Valley California passed away unexpectedly in Palm Desert Sunday, March 23, 2019.

Dr. Bullock is survived by his son Connor Bullock who is pursuing a career in acting and modeling in New York City. He leaves two older brothers, Bruce Bullock and his wife Kelly of Newport Coast, California and Robert Bullock and his wife Kathy Abruzzo, realtors in The Villages, Florida.

Dr. Bullock grew up in Utica, New York where he graduated at the top of his class from New Hartford High School, Utica College of Syracuse University and University of Buffalo Dental School. He served as a dentist in the U.S. Navy in San Diego before being accepted into the UCLA Prosthodontics program, from which he received his degree in maxilla-facial prosthodontics. He remained there to teach prosthodontics at both UCLA and as adjunct professor at USC. He also served at USC County Medical Center before opening his first private practice in Santa Monica. In the late 1980s he moved his practice to Palm Springs and Rancho Mirage.

Dr. Bullock's patients included two U.S. presidents, ambassadors, actors, comedians and athletes. But he was most known for his pro-bono work for hundreds of patients who simply could not afford their own dental needs. Dr. Bullock was renowned among fellow professionals for his skill at the most difficult dental situations. He created devices to replace ears, eyes and major portions of patients' faces resulting from cancer, accidents and even birth defects. He was especially skilled in the area of bite-mark identification. His forensic work was critical to a number of criminal convictions including the notorious Hillside Strangler case in Los Angeles.

But it was his calm demeanor and compassion that made him so beloved to patients and friends alike. He loved sports, particularly baseball and the New York Yankees. He was captain of his high school hockey team which won a state championship in New York. He also loved plants, turning the area behind his dental office into a garden oasis of plants others had discarded as dead. His other great love was dogs and he always owned several.

Richard's patients and friends spanned North America and he visited them from Mexico City to Toronto, Alaska to Florida. He was a beloved friend to all who knew him and will be missed more for his companionship than even his kindness, compassion and sense of humor.

A memorial service is scheduled for May 11, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. at Southwest Church, 44-175 Washington Street, Indian Wells, CA 92210. Friends and family will also convene in his honor in New York around Memorial Day. Dr. Bullock would have encouraged contributions in his name to Southwest Church.

I was a patient of Dr. Bullock's many years ago. Only recently have I had a need to update the dental work he provided me (which is a testament to the enduring quality of his great artistry). His was the first name that came to mind when I was considering a doctor. It was with extreme surprise and profound sadness that I came across his obituary. Richard was a gifted doctor and a remarkable person. May he rest in peace.

I met Dr. Bullock a number of years ago when he had his office in Palm Springs. Recently, he completed extensive and excellent work on my aging stepfather. To say that Dr. Bullock was kind, patient, caring, and understanding, seems inadequate. He was a gem of a human being and you could not but help just love the man. I was both stunned and saddened to hear of his passing. I know that he was truly a blessing to so many. He certainly was this to me. He will be so greatly missed. God bless and keep his soul.

My dear friend and colleague Richard,
Though we both practiced dentistry in Santa Monica and didn't know each other at that time, we certainly developed a kindred friendship when I rerired in Palm Desert. I recognized how talented you were as a dentist and felt it was my obligation to refer so many of my family and friends to your practice. I can never forget your kindness when you allowed me to use your office to do some dentistry for my family needs.

To say I was shocked to learn of your untimely passing and I will keep you in my thought always.

Rest in peace, dear friend!!!

Dr. Richard BullockMay 2019

My words are not strong enough to express the emotions, love, sense of loss, heartache, and disbelief as weve said good-bye to this exceptional man. We respected, admired, laughed and loved that man and friend.

The hurt and loss of Dick in this earthly life is heartfelt by his family and close friends. With each remembrance of Dick, I smile big and give big thanks to our Creator for putting him in our lives (Phil 1:3). I felt like Dick was a brother. He was so very decent, reliable, kind, generous, personable, honest, disciplined, determined and lived mostly with a lightheartedness and perseverance.

Dr. Richard Bullock was a shining star in our profession of clinical dentistry with his giftedness, vision, creativity, curiosity and abilities. Dicks treatments were exceptional and provided with kindness. He could handle any level of complexity in treatments, and yet it seemed routine for him. His talents and brilliance have become quiet.

Consistently, Dick was a catalyst for laughter, with his magnetic humor and recollections. Dick carried with him many significant family and sports pictures, historic clippings, and fun moments in the lives of the Bullock boys. Pranks abounded between McNally, Bullock and Grummons. Each moment unforgettable! He became a genuine friend of those he would meet. Dick gave to and supported others without expecting anything in return.

Dick declared his faith in Christ in recent years, so he lives eternally with our Lord and Savior. We celebrate this and anticipate that eternity for each of us as well. In this we find joy and peace.

He was very principled and disciplined which showed by his words, actions and generous contributions into the lives of others. I will never stop missing him.

Respectfully and with heavy hearts,
(Dr) Duane and Trudy Grummons
