Warren Slaughter Obituary

Judge Warren E. Slaughter, 90, passed away on December 1, 2007 of natural causes at his home in Newport Beach, CA. He was born on February 26, 1917 in Wayne, NE, the son of Ted and Margaret Slaughter. His family moved to California in 1933. He attended Saint Anthony's High School in Long Beach and was the center on school's first varsity football team. He then attended Loyola University and Loyola Law School, graduating in 1942. Upon graduation, he joined the U.S. Navy, serving as an air combat intelligence officer in the Pacific during World War II. On his return, he was assigned to duty in Washington D.C. where he met his future wife, Mary Catherine Shannon. Soon after their marriage, Warren and Mary moved to Palm Springs, CA where he served as City Attorney, and founded the law firm of Slaughter, Schlesinger, and Schlecht. He practiced law in Palm Springs from 1948 until 1966 when he was appointed by Governor Edmund G. Brown to the Riverside County Superior Court in Indio. He served as a judge for 17 years, retiring in 1984. In 1997, the newly founded Palm Springs-Palm Desert-Indio Chapter of the Inns of Court of America was named in his honor. He was a founding member of the Desert Bar Association and was a Knight of the Holy Sepulcher. He belonged to many other professional, religious, and social organizations, too numerous to mention. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary; his four children, Noreen, Don, Sheila and Jim; his sons-in-law, Bill Donoghue and Tom Dey; his daughters-in-law, Gail and Cathie; and his grandchildren, Shannon, Ted, Scott, Maureen, Jim, Kate and Jane. A rosary at 9:30 a.m. and funeral mass at 10:00 a.m. will be held at Our Lady Queen of Angels Church in Newport Beach, CA on December 7, 2007. In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation to the Alzheimer's Foundation of America (www.alzfdn.org/contribute).

Dear Mary, Noreen, Don, Sheila and Jim,

My heart goes out to all of you. I never knew all that Warren and my father had in common. Roots in Nebraska, Long Beach, Loyola, Palm Springs and the courtroom in Indio. Your family's welcome to Palm Springs is a treasure. From the pool table to the pool at Araby Point to the annual horseback ride campout in the wash below the house. The Slaughter home was a welcoming place. It is with saddness I see our parents generation passing. What wonderful examples we have to look up to. I send my prayers for peaceful hearts to all of you.

Jan and I would like to offer our sympathy to the family and let them know they are very much in our thoughts. As a young Deputy District Attorney I tried at least 15 cases in Judge Slaughter's courtroom the last 4 years he was on the bench in Dept A. As a brand new litigator, I could not have had a better role model. Judge Slaughter's integrity was exemplary and he showed me how one should conduct themselves with professionalism and civility. Like Judge Dougherty said I have tried my best to conduct myself as a lawyer and a bench officer to the high standard he set. The lessions I learned from him will always live on in my mind.

My deepest sympathy to the Slaughter family for their loss, every time I drive past the Araby Point area of Palm Springs I think of the fond memories of youthfully playing at the Slaughter's house.

Good day to the Slaughter family.

I was admitted to practice law in California on 12/22/1976. Since then I have been a lawyer and served as a Court Commissioner for ten years.

Never during this entire period of time have I had the honor of appearing before and working with a judicial officer with the industry and integrity of Judge Slaughter. I "mourned his passing" when he simply left the bench many years ago!

Today I learn of your loss and mourn his passing in another way.
Judge Slaughter had the respect of the entire community, particularly the legal community, all of his life here.

The death of His Honor today is a sad one for me. We were blessed and enriched by his presence. His passing diminishes our comminity. I send all of you my very best, and my thanks for having had the honor to have been a lawyer who had the pleasure of appearing in his courtroom.

It is with great sadness that my wife and I learned of the death of Judge Warren Slaughter. I have known and respected Judge Slaughter for over 20 years. My wife appeared in his courtroom in her first days as a Deputy District Attorney. Judge Slaughter set the standard of respect and procedure in the way he ran his courtroom, treated people and his outlook on life. He is the standard every attorney, judge and human being should strive for.
