William "Bill" Edward Raab

William "Bill" Edward Raab passed away peacefully Thursday, April 3, 2014, at home with his wife at his side in Shadow Hills, Indio at the age of 89. Born Sept. 19, 1924, to Josephine Dieckmann and George Alphonse Raab in Oak Park, Ill., Bill was 17 and fresh out of high school with his mother's help, joined the U.S. World War II effort. The following week he was in the Navy. He graduated as a machinist mate and was assigned to the destroyer USS Ammen, which he served on his entire time in the service, 1942-1945. Bill was honored with many ribbons and medals for his service as a water tender 2nd class. Bill and his family moved to Redondo Beach, Calif., where he lived until his retirement from Transamerica Life Co., where he was regional director of agencies for many years. Bill is survived by his second wife, Vivian Louise; sister Carol Markley; daughters Barbara Saunder (John), Carol Suman (Craig) and Patricia Santana (Alex); son Michael Raab (Leslie); stepchildren Craig Nagler (Marie) and Marilyn Albert; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Bill was also a beloved friend to many and will be remembered for his love of family,friends and generosity. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, April 22, 2014, at 10:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 43775 Deep Canyon Road, Palm Desert, Calif. Reception to follow. Burial will be Wednesday, April 23, 2014, at 11:a.m. at March AFB Riverside National Cemetery, 22495 Van Buren Blvd., Riverside Calif. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in his name to the Wounded Warriors or charity of your choice.
