Altha Smith Obituary

Altha Smith

July 4, 1929 - February 22, 2022

Altha H. Smith, 92, passed away on Tuesday, February 22, 2022. Altha was born on July 4, 1929, in Lubbock, Texas. A service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 26, 2022 at The Aggie Field of Honor.

After growing up in Cooper, Texas, Altha moved to Dallas before settling in Houston, Texas. It was while working in Houston that she went on a blind date with "the best-looking man" she had ever seen. That man turned out to be the love of her life. Altha and Gene were married on June 22, 1957. After several years of travelling back and forth between College Station and Houston, they ended up in College Station with their daughter Kimberly. During their time in College Station Altha learned to love all things Texas A&M.

She enjoyed taking Kimberly to visit campus and watching the Aggie Band practice, where she taught her daughter to sing The Spirit of Aggieland and The Aggie War Hymn. The family moved to Silver Spring, Maryland in 1976. They moved back to College Station in 1983, where she and Gene stayed into their retirement years. Altha's biggest joys in life came from caring for and spending time with her family. They spent time camping, gardening, and she absolutely loved cooking for friends and family. In later years she loved entertaining and spending time with her Sunday school class, Class of '53 members, and other groups she was involved in. She also spent several years volunteering at the George Bush Presidential Library. Her greatest joy however, was being able to spend time with her granddaughters, Emily and Melissa. After the death of her husband, Altha spent her remaining years in Katy, Texas, where she lived close to Kimberly and her family.

Altha was preceded in death by her mother, Martha Hall; her sister, Alma Arthur; and her husband, Gene Smith.

Survivors include her daughter, Kimberly Hord and husband, Allen; granddaughters, Emily Hord, and Melissa Hord; sister in law, Judy Smith; niece, Joanne Bradford, and husband, Ronnie; nephews, Trey Smith, and wife, Graceanna, and Gary Smith; nieces, Michelle Catron, and husband, DeWayne, Leslie Holderfield, and husband Jeff. Altha is also survived by many beloved great-nieces and nephews, and great, great-nieces and nephews.

Altha's family would like their thanks to the caregivers at Caydance Assisted Living and Cinco Ranch Alzheimer's Care Center, as well as Fairmont Hospice for their wonderful care while Altha was in Katy.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to First Baptist Church of Bryan.

The way I met Altha Smith, it was when her daughter (Kimberly Anne) told her and her dad (Eugene Smith) the idea to have an ex-change student at home, when they lived at Silver Spring, Maryland

I had the chance to share with them, at the beginning for six month, in person and then for fourty years of conection by letter, by telephone, and by the minds.

The firt contact with Altha (Al) and Eugene (Gene) was at Chile, by the letter they sent to my parents and me. It was a letter wrote by hand, telling how was the Host Home where I would lived for the six month. Since that moment to end of the period, I could said they where the best host mom and host dad. I could see them doing every thing help to give best moment of life while I was in USA.

Altha was a sweet and loving mom always worried for the food, the cares at home and the care of me as young lady, telling me the rigth way I should be as a person in life. As Gene did with helping me with the classes, the language, etc.

Two days before she passed away, I could see Altha in my chating with her niece by Messeger.
- Joanne : "Did I tell you that I asked ever persona I met to call me by my midle name?"..., Joanne
- Jackie : " As auntie Al would said, "you are so picky, picky" . ...

I

And thanks G-d to let me know more about Altha Smith, who show me the way to find G-d, and the great meaning of life.

Love you dear Altha, I will see you with Gene then...

I was so blessed to have had Auntie in my life. I have so many wonderful memories of all the times I got to spend with her, and Uncle Gene. As a little girl I would cry for her when I had to go back home.
She always made me feel so special.
She was like a second mother to me when I lost my mom (her sister Alma).
I could talk to Auntie for hours. I always had so much to say.
Auntie Thank You for always being there for me, my children and, my grandchildren.
I Love You so much and will always hold you very near and dear to my heart. You were definitely one of sweetest Aunt´s a niece could ever
hope for.
I know you are rejoicing in heaven now, and we will be together again one day.
Oh what a beautiful angel you will be.
With all my love.
