Barbara Fisher Obituary

Barbara Fisher

Feb 5, 1941 - Jun 14, 2025

Barbara Fisher was born on February 5, 1941, in Mt. Vernon, Washington, the beloved daughter of Swedish immigrants Axel Teodor Nelson and Bertha Sofia Forss. She finished the race in this life and entered into the presence of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on June 14, 2025.

Above all else, Barbara treasured her relationship with Jesus. Her love for Him was evident in every part of her life, shaping the way she loved her family, her friends, and every person who entered her home. She had a true gift for hospitality. Her door was always open and her table was always full. College students, missionaries, Bible study groups, family, and friends were all frequent guests, welcomed with joy and almost always a home-cooked meal. She never hesitated when someone invited along an extra friend. Everyone was quickly welcomed and led to understand this was home to them too. Her love for Jesus shone brightly in her love for everyone around her.

Barbara's faith began during her time at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Mt. Vernon, where the Moen family faithfully drove her and her friends from Big Lake each week. It was at Emmanuel where she not only grew in her walk with Christ, but also met the love of her life and best friend, Dennis Fisher. Their first date was at the age of 13, when they split a lemon Coke and french fries at Crane's Truck Stop just south of Mt. Vernon.

Barbara and Dennis welcomed their first child, Cheryl, on August 11, 1961. Four years later their son, Brian, arrived. Following the completion of Dennis' graduate studies at Michigan State University, the family settled in Corvallis, Oregon for three years and then moved to Ithaca, NY where both Dennis and Barbara worked for Cornell University.

Barbara was a skilled administrator. When the family moved to College Station, Texas in 1980, she began working for the Department of Economics. She would later become the administrative assistant for two department chairs - Dr. Tim Gronberg and Dr. Thomas Saving. She followed Dr. Saving to the Private Enterprise Research Center, from which she retired in 2007.

She was known for her quick wit and a fiercely competitive spirit -- board games, cards, dominoes and especially when it came to fishing. Barbara didn't just fish; her goal was to catch the first fish, the biggest fish, the most fish, and the last fish. She would often invite the people she loved into the opportunity to compete with her…and lose!

She cherished the beauty of God's creation, seen in her love for the lake by her final home in College Station, Texas. She also had a deep affection for tulips, a reflection of her heritage working in tulip bulb fields as a young girl and a reflection of the beauty she saw in creation. Her home where so many were welcomed was always adorned by art and many tulips.

Barbara was preceded in death by her beloved daughter Cheryl Lynn Deborah and her dear sister Nancy Nelson. She is survived by her devoted husband, Dennis Fisher; her son, Brian Fisher, and his wife Tristie; her son-in-law, Michael Deborah; her grandchildren, Ben and AnnaJoy Fisher; and her great-granddaughter, Aurora Fisher.

She leaves behind a well known legacy of unwavering faith, unconditional love, and joyful generosity. She ran her race with grace, and we rejoice knowing she is now home with her Savior.

Donations in her honor can be made to Grace Bible Church, College Station, TX, or to Brazos Valley Young Life.

Dennis, Brian, Tristie, and family,
Barbara lived her faith in all that she did. Was a blessing for me to call her friend for many years. I know she is now in the presence of her Savior, but it sure leaves sad hearts in those of us left behind until we meet again.

Praying God´s Grace eases your pain during this time,
