Charles Emery McCandless
Jul 26, 1931 - Aug 25, 2025
Charles Emery McCandless, affectionately known as Chuck, passed away peacefully on August 25, 2025, in College Station, Texas, at the age of 94. His life was a testament to service, scholarship, and spirited community involvement.
Born in Dallas, Texas, to Dewey Taylor McCandless and Clara Askins McCandless, Charles' journey began with humble roots and a strong work ethic. He started his working life as a paper boy for the Dallas Times Herald, a role that foreshadowed his lifelong dedication to education and communication.
Charles graduated from North Dallas High School and went on to earn both his bachelor's and master's degrees from Texas A&M University. He later received his doctorate from the University of North Texas, solidifying his commitment to lifelong learning. His career in public education spanned decades, serving as a high school teacher, coach, counselor, university professor, and administrator. His influence shaped countless lives, both in the classroom and beyond.
A proud veteran, Charles served three years in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. His sense of duty extended well into civilian life, where he became a pillar of the Bryan-College Station community. He was actively involved in the CS Recreation Council, Rotary Club, Bryan Boys Club, and served as president of the advisory board to the Central Brazos Valley Mental Health Center. He also contributed his time and energy to Habitat for Humanity, always striving to uplift others. His faith was shaped through his years attending first A&M Church of Christ and more recently Brazos Valley Church of Christ.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother R.B. Nichols, his first wife Joyce Elaine Thompson McCandless, and his daughter Sharon McCandless Newton. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Jeannie Wallace McCandless; his children Cathy McCandless Pankonien (Gary), son-in-law Mike Newton, Debe McCandless Shafer (Scott), Randy Barnes and Jeanne Kay Barnes Springer (Michael); 14 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and a host of extended family and friends who will carry his memory forward.
Charles' passions were as vibrant as his personality. He was an avid sports enthusiast-handball, racquetball, badminton-and a devoted Aggie fan. He served as a high school football official and enjoyed spirited games of bridge. Above all, he cherished time with his family, especially attending sporting events of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Another treasured group included the men in his Friday morning coffee group. Family and friends were definitely the heart of his world.
A graveside service will be held at College Station Cemetery on Texas Avenue on Friday, September 5, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Hospice Brazos Valley, 502 West 28th Street, Bryan, TX 77803.
The McCandless family extends heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate staff at the Isle of Watercrest and the dedicated hospice nurses and volunteers who cared for Charles in his final days.
Charles McCandless lived a life of purpose, generosity, and unwavering integrity. His legacy will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.
